About Shanti
As a fellow artist, I encourage each individual to work with their strengths regardless of style to create individual art unique to the artist.
I love to be able to create and bring to life something that evokes feeling and emotion in others when they see it. To expose others to the world of art is sometimes a truly lifechanging thing.
I come from a creative family and as a child, I was surrounded by artists, but art was not seen as a viable career choice. A trip to the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento made a lasting impression on me, so it has been a wonderful journey to be able to have my own artwork hanging in the Crocker as an adult. Now hopefully my work will inspire others to follow their passion.
I don't have a degree in art, but I have a lifetime of experience creating in many mediums. My work has been featured regionally from Reno to Sacramento and the Bay area. From Acrylic to Watercolor and oil, I am largely self taught. I have taught groups as well as individuals of all ages.
I have experience in pyrography and natural pigments gathered locally, and am a traditional regalia maker in the style of my tribe here in the Sierras, so my artwork is extremely diverse.
Teaching came naturally when others asked how I made something. I enjoy sharing what I do and helping others find what makes them happy. When I was first starting out as an artist I began teaching painting for a major craft store chain as a Grumbacher certified instructor and enjoyed it very much. I branched out and began teaching for local organizations in my community and began individual lessons.
Coming from a family of artists and crafters, I have a lifetime of practical experience in arts. From drawing and painting to yarn arts, pyrography, watercolor, crafting, and traditional regalia making in my tribe, my arts and crafts are many. I attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco briefly and studied Marketing and Advertising, however as so often happens, life had other plans for me. In 2016 I finally left my corporate job and became a full time artist professionally. I am currently in a number of art associations and a community curator for a Native American art collective based in El Dorado County.

I like to discuss expectations and if possible see what the student has been working on. If the student is entirely new to art and just beginning, I want to know if they would like a more structured experience, or if we would be better exploring different techniques to find one that is a good fit for the student. Sometimes what we admire and want to do turns out to be different than what we end up enjoying once we discover it!
I have worked with all ages and abilities in my classes. While teaching for a chain store, I was never sure who was going to attend and had to adapt my lessons to be able to cover a broad range of abilities.
I would advise them to have a conversation with the teacher. Being able to comfortably work with someone while learning something new makes learning easier. Personal style is important if you are wanting to learn to paint in a particular style or manner, but rapport between student and teacher is often one of the biggest keys to a good experience. If affordability is an issue, ask if the lessons can be modified. Perhaps 1/2 hour instead of an hour.
Working with a young woman that was just beginning to paint with acrylics, I noticed her style being very bold and free. Her painting was not at all like the rest of the class and she was happy to have her work be individual and outside the box. She began lessons and after a month she found her style. We painted weekly and she painted every day on her own. After a very short time, I was telling her about an installation in a local business that I had to do and she accompanied me. While we were hanging my work, this young lady met with and talked to the owner, securing the venue for her own work after mine was down. I was so proud of her! She went from budding artist to her own public display and I could see her confidence soaring. That, is a good feeling as a teacher.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you would like to gain from this. What is your end goal? To relax, and have time to yourself, or to gain some new skills you can use professionally? Cost can be an issue, and right now, anything non essential is really a luxury. Discuss your concerns about scheduling. If there are any special circumstances that need to be addressed in order for the student to be able to attend, make sure those are clear. Anything that makes the student wonder should be something that is discussed so that the lessons are as productive as can be for all parties.

Details
Standard rates for lessons are $70 an hour for drawing/painting and pyrography. For lessons in outdoor skills and other arts the rates vary according to lesson and difficulty.
