About Kendyl

I am a twin, so my first teaching experience was as a child, helping my sister with her studies. Then my teachers took me on as a teaching aid (to keep me from troublesome bouts of boredom), and it continued on through high school until finally, my AP US History teacher referred me to one of her students parents. Since then I have had a passion for the development of young minds and became a freelance tutor.

I have been a tutor since I was in Middle School and landed my first paid position as a sophomore in High School. I continued all throughout college and aside from passing several AP tests, spanning a range of subjects, and achieving baccalaureate status in my secondary education, I am currently completing my Life Coach certification as a way to build my mentoring skills. 

My specialties are English and Math, but I pride myself on my ability to retain and simplify information. I have tutored in many different Sciences as well as a myriad of Social Studies including, but not limited to:

Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Economics, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, and my personal favorite, Psychology. 

While I am not fluent, I have also helped my students with both Spanish and French lessons as well.

About the lesson

As a tutor I strive to coach my students not just in academics, but in life. The information taught in the modern curriculum is more or less standardized and, in my humble opinion, it is failing the students it is designed to create. Knowing this, it has become important for me to cater my teaching style to appeal to the differences inherent in each student. I do this by getting to know my students informally. Not just their learning style, but their personal way of thinking. If I know what stimulates them most then I am able to breakthrough the barrier and teach the students in ways that are analogous to their everyday way of learning. This makes the information more engaging, and the students tend to retain the information because it is embedded into the part of their cognition that they utilize outside of school.

The first thing I like to do is create a student profile based on what subjects they like, which they excel in, and their personal preferences for learning.

I have worked with students From Elementary School (k-6) through lower division College courses. Most of my experience is with students ages 11 to 17, but I am a master of simplification and can work with children as young as 4.

I have also worked with children with learning disabilities although I am not specially licensed to take on all students.

Teachers simply disseminate information. They typically have a curriculum outlining what they need to teach and how long they have to produce results and they do so for the time allotted. 

My advice is to seek out true mentorship. Some teachers have much more knowledge to offer students and want to help them to pursue personal growth over the long run. They aren't there just to read along with you. They stay by your side as long as you will have them and provide support in the inevitable rough times students will face.

Details

I typically charge $25 per hour for all of my One-on-One lessons, but I do provide flexibility for negotiation. I also provide group discounts for groups of 3 or more. (inquire for more information)

I understand that finances can be scarce and I don't believe that a lack of funds should mean a lack of attention when it comes to developing students.

My goal with School Outside Schools (SOS) is to be able to reach those students who are having to live and learn in less than favorable conditions and guide them beyond the acquisition of book knowledge. Mental Fortitude is a must and should be accessible to all who seek it.
