About Helen

I won't give up on my students. If something isn't working for you, I will find something that does. A great deal of creativity is necessary when teaching a wide range of diverse students. If an aspect of the work is frustrating or somehow unbearable, we will find a way to make it tolerable and/or even enjoyable.

It is exciting to work with so many diverse personalities and to find ways to empower young people with writing and communication. A firm grasp on the English language is a necessity in this day and age; a beautifully written cover letter is a way to set yourself apart from other candidates. It's always fulfilling to help students find their motivation and give them the necessary tools to be successful and independent.

Firstly, I was raised by an English professor which has led to my passion for teaching.

I worked in the PALS program as a tutor and proofreader/editor for 7th and 8th graders in the process of applying to private high schools.

I attended Mercy College (graduated this past spring) and received multiple awards for excellence in writing and communication throughout my college career. While I was in college, I assisted many of my peers with their cover letters, essays, research and creative writing pieces.

About the lesson

I become familiar with their strengths and goals; this is a combination of asking them some short answer questions and inquiring about what they enjoy. I believe in helping my students by utilizing what they love to help promote a positive relationship with learning and to help them remember our lessons. My primary concern with students is developing their abilities to function without constant support. I want to help them flourish and eventually be comfortable trusting their own instincts as they write, edit and proofread their work.

I have worked with many students who are learning English as a second language. My background in French and Italian makes it easier to teach them in ways that make sense and are memorable. I have also worked with people who are struggling with specific aspects of the English language or writing in general. I am very flexible with my teaching style; the student's needs are my primary concern which means changing it up depending on what works for them.

Always find a teacher who has a passion for what they do as well as the English language. It's important to find a teacher who has patience and understanding with people who think differently from them. You should avoid those who don't encourage you to have your own voice.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you want to get out of this: is it guidance? Is it that you want to learn how to do these things independently? Do you want to become a fantastic writer? Are there aspects of this process that are usually hurdles and/or frustrate you? I will be there with you every step of the way and we can find ways to make this a journey you remember fondly.

Details

Typically I charge $25 an hour, but for the first two lessons during which I plan to get to know my students I will only charge $15/hour. After the first two lessons, if the student would like to continue, I charge the regular price.
