About Jessa

I'm currently a freshman student at a prestigious university and am hoping to help out younger students with their academics! I was very successful in high school, receiving eleven 5's on AP exams. I have experience teaching mathematics and economics to my peers but I also feel comfortable with tutoring in sciences and English. Additionally, I am a chemical engineering major so while my knowledge in several subjects extends through 12th grade, I am most oriented to science, particularly chemistry, and mathematics.

I typically only have 3-4 hours of class a weekday and am therefore available for online and phone tutoring often. I really hope you consider me for your tutoring needs and I look forward to helping you! Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.

I graduated as valedictorian from my high school and am currently a first-year chemical engineering student at University of California Berkeley. Although I have never received formal training, I lectured multiple times a week on mathematics and economics for my academic decathlon team for the past two years and often helped my peers in their classes. I also frequently helped write and edit essays.

These are the AP classes I took and my corresponding scores:

-AP World History: 5

-AP United States History: 5

-AP United States Government & Politics: 5

-AP Macroeconomics: 5

-AP Microeconomics (self-studied): 5

-AP English Language & Composition: 5

-AP English Literature & Composition: 5

-AP Chemistry: 5

-AP Physics 1: 5

-AP Biology: 5

-AP Environmental Science: 5

-AP Calculus BC: 4

If the student has a specific issue or topic they need to discuss, I can begin by explaining that topic before transitioning into practice oriented to what is needed. However, if the student needs help in a broader subject, I would prepare problems or some other method of assessing their level of expertise and if there are any particular topics that they struggle with. As they progress or their class proceeds, I will continue to periodically check their knowledge to ensure that they not only understand the material but actually retain the information for later use, especially if it's an AP class.

I have worked primarily with high school students. However, I am willing to help younger students, although preferably middle school or older. I can also help edit and revise essays for college students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, they should ask whether they need practice with application or explanations on fundamental theory. For someone struggling with application, the teacher would focus on developing more problems for the student to work through and aid in explaining the process used to reach the solution. However, if the student is struggling with fundamental theory, the teacher would need to approach the concept from the beginning to ensure deeper understanding of the material before the transition to application.

Additionally, students should have a general idea of how they would like to structure tutoring sessions. This may include spending time on homework, reviewing and reexplaining notes from class, preparing the student for a test, or teaching new concepts. By providing this information, the teacher can customize the approach to the tutoring session and provide what the student actually needs.

I'm willing to negotiate based on price. However, as the primary factor that would cause me to set a higher rate is the amount of preparation and work outside of the tutoring session that would be required.
