About Shiphrah

I am passionate about my subject and am eager to help students improve their speaking, reading and writing skills. As a college graduate with a B.A. in English, I am able to tutor students of all levels (elementary to college). With more than three years of tutoring/teaching experience, I am familiar with preparing lessons that both engage students and tackle their academic weaknesses. All tutoring lessons are carefully planned, homework thoughtfully assigned, and progress reports carefully written to ensure the academic growth of my students. While I aim to challenge and stretch my students, I also ensure a comfortable learning environment in which they can express their struggles andI questions. As a Mandarin speaker, I have also taught ESL students speaking, reading and grammar.

Within my years of experience, I have worked with a variety of students including academically advanced students seeking further challenge and non-English speakers learning the basics of the language. In all cases, I have thoroughly enjoyed adjusting my teaching style and lessons to meet their needs and goals. In addition, I believe getting to know and foster a healthy tutor-student relationship enables a much more comfortable and engaging learning environment.

(1) I worked as a writing teacher at an education center for six months in which I:

- Tutored elementary to high school students in 90-minute writing classes both online and in-person.

- Planned and created writing curricula catered towards each student’s academic needs and to supplement their school summer homework.

- Taught narrative, expository, argumentative, creative, and literary analysis essays through mini-lessons and collaborative writing sessions while helping students hone their writing skills in each of the writing stages.

(2) I have worked as a private English tutor for more than a year with this website and other online platforms. My responsibilities included:

- Tutoring pre-k to middle school students phonics, ESL, reading, grammar, and essay writing.

- Using both provided and personally researched teaching materials customized for each student.

- Planning daily lessons, assigned homework and filed bi-monthly progress reports.

- Frequently corresponding with staff and parents to better meet students’ academic needs.

I like to meet with the student and/or parent first to gauge their academic goals and needs, that way I can effectively plan and modify lessons from the start. 

I offer a 30 minute trial session (free of charge) in which the student can feel for my teaching style, and I can also feel for his/her learning level.

Details

My standard price system varies by English subject area and grade level:

- Assigned Homework Help (all grades): $35/hr 

During sessions, I will mainly help my student complete his/her assigned school homework, projects, or papers in order to best earn a top grade.

- General English or ESL Improvement (all grades): $40/hr. 

Sessions include a customized researched curriculum catered towards my student's needs, assigned homework, and weekly progress report emails.
