About Katherine
I am a lifelong learner passionate about education and will support your student as they work towards their goals, whatever they may be. I am a second-year college student passionate about music, literature, and foreign language. I have over 9 years of performance experience as a Clarinetist and have received instruction from world-class instructors. I am an excellent reader and writer and can support your student at any level of their English education. I am a particularly strong resource for middle school and high school students. I am also a student of Japanese with over 5 years of experience with the language. Including 2 years of immersive experience. I will work with and support your student as they set their own goals and achieve them in a friendly, engaging, and safe environment. I am health and safety conscious and will work with you to ensure that your student remains safe while I work with them. I am fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and have an up-to-date Flu Shot.
I love helping students set realistic goals and supporting them as they work towards and achieve those goals. My favorite moment during a lesson is when my student finally understands what they have been struggling with and the expression of excitement, relief, and comprehension dawns on their face. I love that moment.
I was at a soccer game and a parent was complaining about how the teachers never had any time to focus on their beginner level clarinetist. I was volunteered to tutor their student and the parent agreed. I discovered I very much enjoyed tutoring the student and have since become very passionate about using my skills to help others. Encouragement from teachers, family members, and friends lead me to expand my tutoring services from just clarinet lessons, to include English and Japanese tutoring as well.
Music- Clarinet: I have 9 years of performance experience in a variety of musical styles, settings, and difficulty levels. Some of which include, Marching Band, Concert Band, High School Level Auditions, and Solo & Ensemble. I have 2 years of paid teaching experience for a beginner-intermediate level middle school student and over 4 years of peer mentoring and collaboration experience with musicians ranging from 6th-12th grade. I have learned from world-class music instructors, including 2 years of one-on-one education with a professional clarinetist working on college-level music. I am looking to work with clarinet students ranging from the absolute beginner to intermediate level.
English: As a college student, I have excellent reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. I am frequently asked by classmates to peer review and critique their written work. I will work with your student to build their skills in each of these areas and work with them to create individualized goals and support them as they work to achieve them. For younger students, I will work with them to build and round out their skills in all three areas, focusing on specific needs as they become apparent (i.e. the student has an upcoming spelling test, I will quiz them on words from their wordlist and help them develop mnemonics to remember how to spell the word). For older students, I will generally focus on developing their skills in a specific area such as essay writing or determining the credibility of a text. I am an excellent resource for high school students looking to improve their English grades or who are currently working on college application essays.
Foreign Language-Japanese: I am a native English speaker who has studied Japanese for over 5 years. I spent 2 years living in Tokyo, Japan having graduated high school abroad, and will bring more than just knowledge of the grammatical structure of the language to your student. I have taken Japanese courses through the AP Japanese level. While in high school, I went straight from Japanese 3 to AP Japanese, bypassing Japanese 4 through a combination of self-study and immersive experiences with native speakers. I have also passed the JLPT N5 Exam and am currently working towards passing the JLPT N4 Exam. I am looking to work with students from the absolute beginner through the high school Japanese 2 level.

Depending on the subject, I will either give them a short quiz to determine their proficiency level and/or review their current schoolwork on the subject to gauge their level of proficiency.
I have worked with middle schoolers, high schoolers, and 1st-2nd year college students. Most of my experience comes from peer collaboration and mentorship roles. I have worked with a student with mild learning disabilities in the past and would be happy to work with a student with similar struggles.
For Clarinet Instruction: a teacher can help you a lot, but you won't be able to reap the full benefits unless you practice in your own time.
For English(reading, writing, critical thinking): find someone who gives positive feedback but critiques your work harshly. The best English Instructors I've ever had were harsh graders but made sure to let me know when I did something really well.
For Japanese: learn the basics from someone affordable but once you are at Japanese 3 level or higher, invest in lessons from a native speaker with teaching experience and excellent reviews.
