About Abigail

My approach to tutoring is not standard for every student. Everybody learns differently so the way I teach everybody is a little different too. I evaluate how the student learns best and adjust my teaching strategy accordingly while understanding that each student is an individual person with their own unique needs and abilities.

I have experience teaching students of all ages in multiple subjects. My college education extends across all subjects, including advanced calculus, statistics and trigonometry, though my passion and degree is History and languages.

My favorite moment of teaching is when a student understands a concept they have been struggling with or when they make a connection with the material. I enjoy learning how students think and learn and finding a way to connect that with the material.

My mother is a teacher and I grew up helping in classrooms. I have much experience with teaching children of all ages on both a volunteer and educational basis. I love both gaining and sharing knowledge, so teaching is an excellent and fulfilling fit for my personality.

I have both academic educational training, classroom experience, and one-on-one experience. My college education spans all subjects including language arts, advanced calculus, trigonometry. However, my degree is in History with a minor in Spanish and in French.

Every student is different. They all learn differently and they deserve a personalized approach to teaching. My goal is to understand where a student is in their understanding of a topic. I aim to listen to any issues they may be having, understand their learning goals, and take a personalized approach to get them where they want to be.

I have worked with students of all age groups, from elementary through college. I have experience with students of all levels including those who have learning disabilities and those who wish to learn beyond what is being taught in their current course.

Just like every student is different, so is every teacher. Make sure that you find a teacher you are comfortable with that you will enjoy working with. History is my area of expertise and it is often a very subjective subject with room for interpretation. That being said, the process of studying history is less subjective. In any humanities, the process of studying and learning is going to be just as important as the content itself. Different tutors will be better for different students and will understand the student's style of learning and be able to effectively teach that style.

I recently was working with a student who was having difficulty connecting to a topic. They had asked multiple different people for help but they told me it seemed like everyone was saying the same thing in their explanations. They heard what was being said but it did not make sense to them.

I listened to what the student was saying and what had already been taught to them. I found a different way to approach the topic and I could visibly see the moment the student understood what I was saying. It was almost like a cartoon of a lightbulb turning on.

Moments like that are my favorite part of teaching. I could see the relief the student felt at finally being able to understand the concept. The little bit of extra time spent understanding where the student was at in their learning process was entirely worth the result.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before selecting a tutor, it is good to know what you want to gain from your tutoring sessions. Is help needed with a subject or topic? Are there issues with memorization or processing? A tutor is there to help a student's needs. By better knowing the need, a tutor will be able to more effectively aid the student.

In general, I charge $20-35 per session depending on it's length and subject matter. I prefer for lessons to be at least 30-60 minutes in length in order to maximize the learning benefits of each session for the student. Though this is a general standard, my approach to teaching revolves around each individual student so this is subject to change based on any given student's needs.
