About Serena

Hello future student!

My name is Serena and I currently teach ESL and ELA online to students ages 3-99. I have taught both online and abroad (in Guatemala) for 7 years total. I have enjoyed teaching more than 450 students! I teach both adults and kids and I would love the opportunity to tutor you!

The focus of your lessons will be based on your specific needs and goals.

Many of my students achieve a quality North American accent and functional vocabulary to enable them to speak, read, and write English as they progress through grade school and university.

I place an emphasis on phonics and accent reduction with vocabulary building so you become confident in your comprehension abilities and being understood by others when you are communicating in English.

In addition to English, I have a professional degree in Physical Therapy, Medical Technology, and a strong background in medical terminology. This may be helpful if you are pursuing a medical career.

I have worked with very young children as well as teenagers and adults. I tailor the content and techniques I use in my lessons accordingly to keep our time together interesting and engaging. I take a very friendly and relaxed approach with my students so they can gain confidence in interacting with me online.

I use a lot of props, singing, and TPR (total physical response) with younger children to establish a visual, auditory, and physical connection with the English vocabulary and sentence patterns they are learning.

With high school students and adults, I use interesting visuals and subjects to encourage as much use of the language as possible. I will help you to express your ideas and knowledge. I correct errors in an encouraging atmosphere and motivate you to reach your goals. You'll enjoy playing vocabulary and role-play games to build confidence and comprehension skills.

You can enjoy speaking with me about your favorite subjects, academic and career goals. If you're concerned about your accent, you can enjoy playing listening, reading and speaking games with me to refine your accent.

I really enjoy helping my students reach their goals and dreams! I like to use English studies to get to know my students and build a great relationship with them as they share their ideas and relate their life stories.

My students have a great time role-playing with me which gives them an idea of how to communicate well with their friends, colleagues, professors, and prospective employers. I'm always excited to role play any new situation that a student needs!

Most of all, I really share the satisfaction with my students as they improve their skills and experience the positive impact it has on their lives, relationships, educational and career achievements.

I have always enjoyed teaching children and adults. Teaching comes naturally to me and I have taken courses and certifications to further refine my skills.

I began teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) to Pre-K to 6th grade students in Guatemala from 1998-1999.

I continued teaching biblical history to children from 2003-2020. I am not currently teaching biblical studies due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I have taught English as a second language (ESL) online since early 2019. I continue to teach exclusively online at this time.

I have a certificate in teaching English as a foreign language. (TEFL)

I have a certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages. (TESOL)

I have a Master's degree in Science and Physical Therapy.
