About Caitlin

I have a master's degree from The University of Virginia, and a second master's from Columbia University, where I am also working on my Ph.D. in Classics.

While I am now working with college students, I spent eight years as a teacher, teaching and tutoring grades 3-12 in Latin, Greek, writing, and SSAT/ISEE test prep. I also supervised high school applications for private schools in New York as well as for boarding schools nationwide. I am deeply passionate about the profession of teaching and would embrace the opportunity to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with your student or child. I look forward to speaking with you.

I come from a family of teachers and have loved teaching for my whole life. It has always been my passion!

I have two master's degrees, and am in the process of finishing a doctorate. I also have worked with students ages 8-20 in a decade of teaching and tutoring.

About the lesson

The first thing I do when working with a new student is find out what their goals are for the session and for sessions more generally. Then I work on getting to know the student and, more specifically, how he/she learns. I think it's incredibly important as a tutor and teacher to have several different ways to teach material so that you can make sure a student understands and then is able to apply the new information and skills. I work to meet the student where he or she is and start the teaching process from there.

I have worked in a junior boarding school with grades 3-8, I have tutored and taught high school students, and have spent several years teaching college-aged students.

I would ask a student to be clear about his or her goals for tutoring. The goal "I want to improve my grades" is reasonable, but I encourage students to be more specific. Do you want to be better at studying? Test-taking in a particular class? Note-taking? Writing a five-paragraph essay? It is important not only to think about the general goal for a student, but also the steps toward it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is this a person I feel comfortable working with? Does this teacher listen to my questions and explain the answers clearly? Does this teacher simply tell me the answer or teach me how to get to the solution? Do I feel comfortable telling this teacher I don't understand something?
