About Lisa

I love reading and writing and I love working with students to tailor sessions to their writing needs. Some students need more help with grammar, sentence structure and following citation rules, other students need more help getting their ideas down on paper in an academic fashion. All of these needs are exciting as is a combination of them all. My tutoring philosophy is to help students develop their reading and writing skills and feel confident with their writing in the future. I also enjoy working on spelling, pronounciation, vocabulary building and critical thinking skills.

I work with students of all ages but most of my students have been in grades 5-12, in college or graduate school programs. Many of the books and passages they are reading I am familiar with and I enjoy reading them again with students so I can help them frame their insights and draw out content that they have but are having trouble organizing or articulating. I've also worked with ESL students to refine the nuances they often face ( i.e. words that sound the same but have very different meanings - waist vs waste), words that have sounds that don't exist in their native language. The PH as F sounds or the words with hidden letter sounds like, mnemonic.

I started teaching in Graduate school. I was an expository writing instructor at a high school and I was also teaching Creative Writing at a correctional facility. After my teaching placements in graduate school I taught two intermediate level college writing classes -Writing Research Papers and Language, Thought and Critical Analysis. Then I began working with students on 1:1 instruction. For experience with younger students. I have also taught 5th graders Reading, Writing and Math for their summer school program. For graduate students and adult learners I've worked with them on increasing the quality of their writing for papers (proper citation, organizing and effectively showcasing their research, editing sentence structure and syntax challenges)

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities with a Concentration in Writing and a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing. I taught expository writing at a high school for two years, was an adjunct professor of two intermediate level college writing classes - Writing Research Papers and Language, Thought and Critical Analysis. I have been working one on 1:1 with students on their essays and papers for everything from applying to College and Graduate school to writing clear and well organized research papers since 2009.

I like to start with a 20 minute consultation so we can an idea of where the student is at and what specific things they are having challenges with. This gives me and the student an idea of what we can work on together and if we're a good match. Consultations are also for the student to think about what they'd like to get out of tutoring. Often younger students get tutors because they're told to but it's harder for them to say what they would like to get from the tutor. I encourage them to think about how they learn best and we can integrate those methods in our work together. i.e Flash cards or index cards, practice tests, books with illustrations, rhyming to remember Grammar rules.

You want a teacher that is a good listener and a strong observer. Ideally they are listening to what you say you need and what you are showing them you need during sessions or with your samples ( essays, papers, tests, quizzes, etc). So keep that in mind, are they teaching you the things you asked about? Do they seem open to tailoring their style to your needs?
