About Marian
Scientific writing – art historical writing and coursework – foundational reading and writing skills – resume, cover letters, and personal statements
As a versatile, experienced, and passionate writer, I can work with students on an array of writing assignments, ranging from the specific to the general, from art historical to humanities to scientific.
Are you hoping to build foundational skills in reading and writing? I have many strategies to help students improve their spelling, vocabulary, and reading skills.
Are you working on a short lab report for class or a long and intricate scientific paper that explains months worth of research? With a B.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from New York University and as NYU’s 2019 recipient of the American Institute of Chemist Award, you can count on me to provide insight concerning technical writing.
Do you have a few-page formal analysis or twenty-page research paper for an art history course due soon? Are you preparing for an art history exam that requires memorization of artworks, artists, dates, etc.? I would be happy to work with you through these processes that I’m familiar with from my previous and current art history courses (both undergraduate and graduate level).

The process of writing was the most crucial and rewarding part of my high school and university education––and writing is still an important part of my daily life. It has allowed me to connect threads between my seemingly disparate interests in both art history and science. For me, it is the process, and I stress the word process, of writing that is so fulfilling. I have always enjoyed workshopping both my and others’ writing pieces in a collaborative process of refining one’s thoughts. I love joining people on the journey towards discovering the beauty and power of language, no matter the subject. I enjoy helping others become confident in their writing abilities and gain skills that they will hold onto throughout and beyond their education.
I graduated from New York University with summa cum laude and a B.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in May 2019. From writing weekly lab reports throughout college, as well as from researching in various labs for which I have written extensive research papers, I understand both the challenges and excitement involved in explaining complex scientific phenomena via the written word. Having taken numerous art history courses (including one currently), I am equally passionate about art historical research and the emotional writing processes involved. My work that sits in the middle of the science–art spectrum has been published by NYU Confluence and Twist Bioscience.

As I understand that everyone has different learning styles and that writing can be a personal and emotional process, the way I communicate and the writing tools I share are tailored to the student. That being said, below is a general process – with much room for tailoring – that I find useful in helping students gain confidence in a specific writing piece or their writing skills in general.
After becoming acquainted with a new student who is seeking help with a writing piece, I typically will ask them to relay the purpose for the piece (e.g. an essay prompt or a job/internship description). It is helpful if the student has a copy of the prompt, description, etc. I will ask them to briefly walk me through what they've written so far (the ability to vocalize your writing shows a deep understanding of your thoughts). Together, we will read through their work word by word, sentence by sentence. If I notice a discrepency such as grammatical error or incomplete thought, I will ask leading questions that encourage the student to realize the issue and arrive at alternative wording. Depending on the student, either I or the student will note the error and/or alteration on their work – on paper or in Word with track changes, for example. I will also offer insight concerning writing structure, theses, flow, etc., as well as online resources that may be helpful. The next time we meet, hopefully the student will come with their updated work, and we will repeat the process until satisfaction is reached.
If the student hasn't started writing, we will do an interactive brainstorming session – largely led by the student, but I will offer personal advice based on my experiences with similar writing pieces. The student will then create an outline, with my guidance as needed. I may ask them to write a first draft of an introductory paragraph before taking their notes home to flush out a more complete draft. If we meet again, we will work through an editing process similar to the one descibed above.
I have worked with a range of students including high school students as they prepare personal statements for college applications, as well as my college peers as they refine their lab reports and research papers.
I would advise a student to hire a teacher that seems genuinely interested in the project, assignment, or skillset the student is working on. I recommend finding a teacher that seems to foster natural and personable communication with the student. It is also important that the student works with a teacher that is willing to continue returning to a topic of concern, that is, a teacher that doesn't tend to rush through the process of learning and all the nuances therein.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should try to think about what exactly they need help with. Do they need help with writing under time constraints? Are they struggling to make abstract ideas, particularly within art history and science, legible? It's also great if students reflect on how they feel about the topic at hand. For example, do they enjoy writing? Or do they prefer carrying out math problems instead? I would love to help students feel better about school/work requirements that might get them down sometimes.
