There is only one thing more rewarding than practicing and mastering one's own personal skills, and that is having the privilege of sharing the process with another person and introduce them to the life enhancing experience of learning something new.

I have always had an innate ability to connect with my students building a rapport that enhances the learning process.

Initially, I began by introducing my son to reading and writing before he entered kindergarten.  It served him well and he was always an advanced learner throughout school.

I enjoyed that so much I began tutoring 2nd and 3rd graders with reading at my son's elementary school.

My career provided opportunities for me to train fellow employees in various workplace disciplines.

I also created a curriculum for, and taught, adult beginning and advanced interior design classes at the Arapahoe Community College in Denver, Colorado.

I took classes to learn ESL (English as a second language), but no longer do so.

My first priority is to establish rapport with my student.  This makes the learning process more effective and enjoyable for both of us.

It is most helpful if I have the opportunity to review samples of the student's recent homework assignments or test papers in the case of tutoring for reading and writing.

For students desiring tutoring in creative, artistic techniques, samples of any current art the student may have produced is good, or perhaps even pictures of what interests them.

When I help someone create an effective resume, a frank discussion regarding the client's work experience, skill sets, and goals must be ascertained first.

All the above are important, giving me a good idea of my student's current strengths and weaknesses so we don't waste their time and money covering material that is not relevant to their needs.

It is important that the student feel comfortable with the teacher very early in the process.  The teacher should provide the student a safe environment during lessons and communicate confidence in the student's ability to improve.

It is very beneficial if the teacher has had experience in a broad range of subjects.

As to the teacher's abilities, the proof is always in the pudding and can quickly be determined from the students progress and enthusiasm.

My next door neighbor's little boy felt secure enough with me to ask if I would help him because he was struggling with his reading and comprehensive skills which embarrassed him.'

Several weeks after we began our work together he told me that not only was he now able to keep up with his classmates, but that he looked forward to our tutoring sessions because he had so much fun.

This is what every teacher hopes for.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should be honest with their instructor on the front end regarding the student's strengths and weaknesses in the subject they are being tutored in.

Student should inquire from teacher what the technique or learning approach the teacher uses.

Basically, both the student and tutor deserve to know what they should expect on the front end.

I recently made some changes in my pricing system.

During the first month of tutoring I believe that twice per week sessions are very beneficial because it facilitates an opportunity for the student and myself to quick establish rapport, allowing for more rapid progress learning.  These twice per week sessions cost $20/hour.

After the first month my fee drops to $18/hour whether the student takes tutoring once or twice per week.

My fee for students starting their tutoring with only one session per week is $30/hour for the first month.  Thereafter I charge only $20/hour going forward whether they are taking sessions either once or twice per week.
