About Kathy

Hello! My name is Kathy and I'm a current English and American Literature graduate student at New York University (NYU). I am located in Pasadena, CA.

I am operating as an in-person/remote private English tutor (Reading and Writing) for all grade levels. Currently, I am in the process of applying for Ph.D programs for the Fall 2022 term.

As a student and writer myself, I understand how frustrating it can be when you cannot express your thoughts in writing as clearly as you intended. I want to make the acts of writing and reading a fun and creative process with room for growth in academic, interpersonal, and professional areas. Seeing those I've helped improve their grades, achieve their goals, and have fun makes tutoring worthwhile.

Experience:

To date, I have mentored children between the ages of 3 and 5 years on basic vocabulary and reading comprehension skills with JUMPSTART at NYU. I have also aided in the drafting, writing, proofreading, and editing of high school and college/university level courses for classmates and friends resulting in an overall improvement in letter/numerical grades.

Areas of Expertise include:

Reading:
American & British Literature, classic literature, critical reading, reading comprehension, Shakespeare & poetry, SAT/ACT Reading, ACT English

Writing:
Essays, research papers, book reports, narrative writing, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, creative writing, poetry, drafting, editing, proofreading, SAT/ACT Writing

Additional:
Critical analysis, research methods, time management, study strategies, note-taking, organizational skills, public speaking, presentations, Microsoft Office Suite

Education:

B.A. in English and American Literature from New York University (NYU)
M.A. in English and American Literature from New York University (NYU)

My typical process for working with a new student includes:

1) Establishing reliable and transparent communication / building rapport with the student and if applicable, their parents/guardians.

2) Devising a personalized plan of action, which includes evaluating their current reading and writing levels, asking them to explain what their desired results may look like, indicating the presence of any upcoming deadlines, and acommodating their specific learning style.

3) Setting up a list of attainable and flexible goals. These goals may be short-term or long-term depending on the student's current level and desired results.

From toddlers to college students, I have worked with students from all academic levels.

Don't settle for just any teacher/tutor.

Find one who understands and accomodates your learning style, listens to your concerns and fears, and strives to help you develop the skills and confidence necessary to own your reading and writing skills.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions include:

1) What do I already know and not know about the subject and/or assignment(s)?

2) What areas do I need the most help with and what areas do I need the least help with?

3) When giving an assignment, how do I begin working on it?

4) Are there any details about my learning environment, whether at school or at home, that may help the teacher/tutor in creating a plan of action for me?

If you need to re-schedule or cancel a session, please inform me at least 24 hours prior to our scheduled time slot. You can either email, call, or text me, whichever is more convenient for you. If you fail to do so, you will be responsible for full payment of the session.

Cancellations as a result of inclement weather/events (snow, sleet, hail, tornado, hurricane, severe thunderstorms, wildfires) and emergencies are subject to exceptions.

Payment can either be refunded or the session can be re-scheduled for a more appropriate time.
