About Shunya
I try to tailor all of my lesson plans to the student's way of learning and help to create a detailed goal-oriented plan for my students.
I love to engage in critical analytical discussion with my students. Analytical and logical thought are such important characteristics for a lawyer so I enjoy to help build up that trait within students by challenging them to really understand the flow of their arguments and what the real world implications would be.
I first began teaching as an ESL teacher in Tokyo. After law school I began to tutor the bar exam both privately and with a company, Themis.
As an attorney with both a J.D. and L.L.M I am someone with a detailed understanding of law and policy as well as excellent writing and research skills. In my moist recent L.L.M program I was trained to write academic papers and articles which is rather transferable and useful in teaching college essay drafting.

I like to begin my first meeting with the student by going over a questionnaire in order to identify what areas they are struggling in the most. Once the student and I have identified these areas I then will discuss the learning and studying methods the student currently utilizes. Then I will talk with the student about their time line and goal. If the first meeting is long enough I will have the student do some assignments to test their ability. Once we've had this preliminary discussion I will take this information to formulate a study plan and send to the student within two days of our first meeting.
I have worked with Japanese business people, Japanese children, recent law graduates and out-of-state attorneys for the the bar exam.
Be clear about what your timeline and goals are when hiring a tutor as this will enable them to create a path for you to diligently work down even outside of sessions.
