About Susan

Purdy Smart Tutoring raises the bar in the area of the written arts. From teaching basic grammar and vocabulary to deconstructing more advanced writing techniques and decoding Shakespearean plays and prose, Purdy Smart Tutoring teaches a broad range of English language categories.

Susan Purdy graduated from UC San Diego in 2004 with a B.A. in Theatre Arts and has a continuing passion for creative writing and literature. She has worked as an Assistant Producer at CBS13 News as well as a copy writer at Lumens Light + Living, and she continues to write lyrics and fiction for her own enjoyment.

Susan started teaching in 2009, working as a long term rotating substitute teacher at a high school specializing in the arts. She currently homeschools her elementary school child while working part time as an online tutor.

Susan has experience in a broad range of writing styles, from news stories to basic copy editing, journal publications, TV/Film screenplays, theater plays and music lyrics. She is a master at the English language and is currently studying Latin to broaden her knowledge of other languages as well.

About the lesson

Susan works with students online in the evenings, Monday through Friday, to assist with grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, comprehension and writing assignments. The tutoring sessions are student-led, requiring the student to be prepared with questions and a desire to learn.

Susan has worked with students grades K-12.

Students should look for a tutor who will challenge, encourage, and enlighten them. Like Plato or Socrates, a good teacher (or "magister/magistra" in Latin) is one who pushes the student (or discipula/discipuli) to think through problems from many different angles. This strengthens the most vital organ - the brain - in order to help not only the individual, but the populus as a whole.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should have, at the very least, a basic idea of their short term and long-term goals. Are you interested in becoming a speech writer for the President of the United States of America, or are you simply wanting to better your knowledge of the English language? There is nothing more painful for a student (or a teacher of the student) than slogging through the muck and mire of hard work with no strong, attractive and rewarding goal at the end of the road.

Students should also be realistic about how much time they are willing to spend studying or working on a subject per week. Practice makes progress, and there is absolutely no replacement for practicing.
