About Sarah
I currently work as a Third Grade teacher in the Sayreville School district in the Inclusion classroom. I graduated with my bachelors degree from Rowan University with a major in Reading. I have experience working with children in grades Pre-K through 6 from one on one setting to large group classroom settings. As a general education teacher I do teach and have ample experience in all subjects. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have.
Working with children I've come to realize that your mindset is a huge component. Believing in yourself and your abilities are essential to be successful, and while certain skills and strategies may come easier to others, it's your positive thinking and hard work that will help you achieve your goals. It's hard to instill intrinsic motivation but that's what I love about teaching. I have the opportunity to change the mindset of a child, which will only help them to be a better learner throughout their educational career.
I did not know that teaching was the path for me until I took a trip to Niccuragua in highschool to help build a preschool for a community that was very much in need. During my time there I was able to interact and exchange knowledge with the students who attended the school which is two classrooms constructed of brick with iron bars as windows and a metal roof. A truly eye opening experience for me but one student especially had a long lasting impact and upon return to States I decided to peruse my passion for teaching further. Starting with enrolling in child development courses and the preschool program at my school. Working with children became part of my summers as well as I became a camp counselor and eventually supervisor for my community's camp. I then attended Rowan University where I graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Teaching and Reading Endorsement.
As part of my undergrad I was required to tutor a specific number of hours. My experience in this one on one setting was teaching reading and writing to a 6th grader and later on a first grader. After graduation I was hired for a 6 month leave in a second grade classroom. The district then hired me full time as a third grade teacher in an inclusion classroom where I will be returning for my third year. I also tutor a group of third graders in reading twice a week for two years now. We work on phonics skills, fluency, comprehension and writing during these sessions. I also work twice a week during my lunch one on one with a third grader on reading with a similar focus but specific to his needs. Looking forward to tagging on math tutoring next year as well.

Working in the inclusion classroom means that while I do not currently possess my special education certification (although it is a goal to obtain said cert in the future) I do have experience with students who have various IEPs (Individual Education Plans). I have also worked with students with 504 plans and students with interventions for math, reading and behavior.
At an elementary school level it's especially important for the student to have some type of connection with the teacher. Motivation is key so if the child is enjoying learning, the result will be significant.
I've been very fond of training for Triathlons and Iron Mans. When I'm not teaching I enjoying swimming, biking and running. As a teacher and athlete I've learned about how essential a positive mindset is, that believing in yourself and your abilities is crucial to be successful in any aspect or goals you have. The younger individuals learn that the better, teaching and coaching which I also do allows me to to impact young people mindset in the best way possible! :)
