About Nicole
My two majors are Japanese and Linguistics. The Japanese major has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the Japanese language and culture; in addition, I have studied abroad for a year at one of the top schools in Japan. The Linguistics major has provided me with opportunitites to understand the process of first and second language acquisition and linguistic concepts that influence the development of Language.
In terms of my work background, I have 6 years of tutoring experience and 4 years of teaching experience. I am able to provide support for students as a tutor and/or provide material and lessons as an instructor. I have been trained to teach using a method that allows the student to develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills in order to be able to tackle challenges and obstacles with a miniminal need to rely on me or others to guide them. I have taught in various subjects including but not limited to English, Spanish, Japanese, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Writing Comprehension, Physics, and Chemistry.

During the first lesson, if the student has material that they would like help with, I will watch how the student approaches the material. I like to observe the student's learning style and adjust my teaching methods accordingly. If the student does not have any particular material to work on together, I will usually ask the student what their goals are and do a few simple activities to evaluate the student's needs and objectives.
When it comes to teaching language, being an expert in the subject is important. Many people believe that hiring a native speaker is the best and, sometimes, only choice; however, unless trained to teach in that language, many native speakers are not able to properly educate others. They may be able to tell you that something is incorrect; on the other hand, they will, more times than not, be unable to tell you why. For students who aim to acquire proficiency in a language, the "why" is the most important part-- it allows the student to be able to master concepts of language that can be applied in the future. That is not to say that native speakers are not an ideal choice; I just advise students to choose a trained instructor who can truly explain concepts of the language.
The second piece of advice that I would give to students is to look for an instructor who you feel comfortable with and can trust. Chemistry between a student and teacher is extremely important for the student's development in a classroom or lesson setting. These types of settings are supposed to be designed to help students grow by making mistakes and learning from them. If the student cannot trust and feel comfortable with their instructor, the rate of growth will progress much slower due to an unwillingness to make mistakes. The classroom/lesson setting should always be a safe space for the student, and it is up to the instructor to ensure the atmosphere allows for growth and development.

Details
The base rate for all tutoring lessons is $20/hour. However, this price might change depending on the workload and complexity of a lesson. Typically, a lesson led by myself where I provide materials for the student will be $35/hour. Any and all prices will be discussed with the student/guardian beforehand and will only be charged when all parties are in agreement.
