About Sierra
My focus is on equitable education and I want to make your education work for you. The system doesn’t work for everybody, so I want to give you the time and care you need to succeed not just academically, but in life.
I love seeing students grow and learn new skills and ways of thinking. It is always exciting when students begin to realize that the skills they learn inside the classroom apply to every part of their life!
I got started teaching in classrooms by beginning to teach swim lessons as a teenager! I enjoyed the process of seeing students grown and get new skills. In college I began working in classrooms as aids and assistants, and got a chance to see what wasn't working in our schools. It inspired me to want to change things.
I have been an educator for over five years. I have worked as a tutor for over seven years. I have worked in schools as a middle school bilingual learning assistant and elementary behavioral technician. I have also taught summer school at the elementary level. I have two B.A.'s from UC Santa Cruz: Language Studies (emphasis in Spanish and Linguistics) and Film/Digital Media (emphasis in Production). I am also a mentor for queer college students looking to start Bible studies. I am currently getting my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (emphasis on Literacy and Language Arts) at Penn State. Along with my degree I will be receiving a teaching certification for 7-12 grade English.

My typical process begins by asking them some questions about who they are and why they want tutoring. Then we can take a look at the assignment they brought and we can begin building the raport. I can also observe the student's approach to the assignment.
I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students with some college-level tutoring. I also have specific training and skill sets for students with autism, ADHD, and anxiety. I am bilingual in Spanish as well, and have worked in many Spanish/English classes before.
I would tell students to look for someone who cares about you as an individual, understands the education system as a whole, and wants to motivate you to do your best while being true to yourself.
I recently got a new cat! Due to an ear infection as a kitten, his head is always tilted, so he moves around like a hammerhead shark. It's very adorable and doesn't impede him in any way! I'm surprised how fast he is.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about concept questions they have, not just about the assignment. Assignments get a lot easier when you know the material! Figure out what about the assignment doesn't make sense, and then decide what apart of the concept you should ask about.
