I've always had a passion for teaching others, even as far back as pretending to play "school" with my younger siblings and having them complete various worksheets.
I was grateful to gain experience with junior high students via a work-study program at IUS while I was pursuing my degree.
I was trained by Indiana University Southeast, as part of a work-study program, to serve as Lead Tutor for an after-school program serving ages 9-11 to assist with routine homework related to general education subjects that included Math, English, History, and Science.
I was my math teacher's primary assistant in helping classmates to grasp the concepts being taught. Not only was the class often split into two smaller groups for this purpose, but my fellow students were comfortable in knowing that their daily work and quizzes would also be graded by me.
I used to serve on a team of college-age tutors which mentored at a local middle school. We were assigned with a group of eighth graders who were identified as having complex behavioral challenges. I helped to focus them on reading over assigned materials, working through daily assignments, and preparing for quizzes and testing.

I like to begin with hearing from the student about their strengths and what they excel in. Next, we go over what they perceive to be their primary challenges. Together, we determine a plan of action which they are comfortable with and that best suits their academic goals.
I have partnered one-on-one with senior high schoolers, aided students of 5th and 6th grades that were aged 9-11, and Eighth graders aged around 13-14 years old while sometimes having to overcome behavioral challenges.
You shouldn't necessarily choose the first tutor you come upon. Instead, be purposeful to discover how potential aides can adapt to your needs. Be open-minded to techniques that may not be highly familiar with.
I'll never forget the day that my son left his Awards Day ceremony at the close of 9th grade. He brought home a total of 8 awards including ones for behavior, attendance, and academic acheivements. Most notable was the fact that his core teachers (Math, Science, and Language) had each chosen him as their "student of the year" based upon overall performance and also personal growth.
