About Ellen

I tutor primarily in English. That means I can tutor ESL, English studies, or writing. I love working with people to improve their English skills, whether it's their first language or not.

I work with students on ESL, English writing, English Language use, types of writing, reading, speaking, listening, and pronunciation.

I understand that English is difficult. I have a lot of patience and compassion for learners and love to see them succeed. Admitting you need a tutor is hard. I've had to do it myself. The journey, however, should be fun, not painful.

Language is the most important gift we have. The ability to communicate effectively gives us a step up in the world. Reading is a perfect way to excel at language and open up new ideas. I love to help people learn to read, write, and speak English so they can excel in school, work, and life.

I am studying to be a teacher to students whose first language is not English.

I am enrolled in the International Teaching English as a Foreign language (TEFL) program with the International TEFL Academy, the most respected TEFL program in the US. I have an English degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I have worked as a technical writer and editor for the past 12 years for major Fortune 100 companies. I also studied to be a teacher at the University of Washington - Cheney.

About the lesson

I like to get to know my students and work with them to identify their perceived problem areas. Once that is established, we can create a plan for tutoring that works with our schedules, including any homework.

Elementary students from China.

Find someone who is patient. Learning is a process and it's difficult because you hit roadblocks. It's important you feel comfortable with discussing your problems with your tutor. They are paid to help you.

I just returned from India for a month and a half. I was working with Animal Aid India in the animal hospital. I worked with people from India and all over the world. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I love meeting people from other countries and hearing their stories and experiences.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my problem areas?

Why do I want to improve these areas?

Where are the areas that I am already doing OK?

What do I already know?

What do I expect from my tutor?
