About Lillian
I have tutored students' writing in fields from biology to creative writing, political science to music, all in one of the nation's best Writing Center's at the University of Iowa. I have strong academic skills in my own right, but I also have strong interpersonal skills to help each student connect better with what they are learning.

I love the 'aha' moment that students get, when learning goes from a word they've heard, to an action they can take. I love learning that is self-motivated: this is also why I love tutoring. I often find that people who seek out tutoring are already wanting to learn.
I also love the one-on-one interactions of tutoring, because I am better able to listen and tailor my teaching to fit the needs of each student.
I first started teaching as a swim instructor in high school! I didn't even know much about swimming, but I loved the teaching aspect, and since then have sought out various teaching experiences, leading to my degree in Teaching English as a Second Language.
I have worked for two years at the University of Iowa Writing Center as a tutor, and one year as an ESL Instructor, also at the University of Iowa. I have a Master's degree in Linguistics, with an emphasis in TESL, and a Bachelor's in Music.

My first priority is always listening to the needs and abilities of my students. I want them to take ownership of the process. I will often ask questions to help my students come to their own conclusions. I focus on the larger issues present, before nit-picking the little details, (like starting with the thesis statement before looking at grammar) and use encouragement to reinforce the good things that are already happening.
I have worked with everyone from toddlers to PhD candidates, people struggling to master basic English grammar to mature writers just looking for help in the brainstorming process. The majority of my experience at the University Writing Center was with college freshman, working especially on rhetoric papers.
Look for someone who will help fix the right things. Someone may be an expert in a field, but a good teacher will know that no one becomes perfect in one day. Learning is a process, and it should be an enjoyable one. This is true whether someone is learning writing, ESL, Linguistics, or any other field. The best learning happens when we are encouraged to take ownership of the process ourselves.
While tutoring a student over the course of a semester, I had been explaining the importance of simplicity in writing. She was struggling with a rhetoric paper, unsure how to organize it, what points to include, how to end it, etc. But suddenly, in our session, she realized that her thesis statement was too broad. She was then excited to finish writing her paper, as she finally knew what she wanted to say. In her next draft, all the other problems were solved because she had a strong thesis statement. These experiences are the reason I love tutoring. With one piece of guidance, she now looked forward to the writing process, because it gave her a voice to say what she thought.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is your relationship with the learning process?
Can you approach the material in a different way?
What assumptions do you already have about the material? What do you already know?
