About Emily
I have been a music teacher for over 10 years in both public and private schools. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, from Cal State Fullerton as well as a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music. I recently received a Master of Music Education from Kent State University. I have also taught private lessons on Flute for over 12 years, as well as other band and orchestra instruments. I started playing the flute when I was 10 years old and have never looked back. Throughout my education I wanted to be involved in as many different music experienecs as possible. I wanted to help students have this same passion for music that was instilled in me at a young age. This is the reason I pursued a degree in music education.
I have always wanted to be a music teacher. I believe that music unlocks emotion and self-expression and that comes from learning to perform music on an instrument. I enjoy getting to know my students and their musical interests so I can better customize lesson plans. I feel that since learning music is an organic process, students will learn best when they take an active approach to their learning and they are involved as much as possible in the process. I love watching a student grow in their skills and abilities and strive to help each student achieve their goals. I am constantly striving to adapt to the changing music culture to best meet the needs of my students. It is important for me as a teacher to reach the students at the level they are at, help them set achieveable goals and give them the tools to achieve these goals.
I have always wanted to be a teacher and in high school I became very involved in the music program. I enjoyed being on student leadership and helping to instruct students younger than me. This sparked my passion for music education and I decided to pursue music education as my profession. After high school I immediately got started teaching private Flute lessons and have expanded my knowledge from there by pursing higher education as well as attending state music educator conferences and the National Flute Convention when I have the ability. Teaching music is my calling in life and I whole heartedly put everything I can into making myself a better teacher.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential from Cal State Fullerton. I have a Masters of Music Education from Kent State University. I recently obtained a Texas Educators Certificate. My primary instrument of study in college was the Flute where I studied with Cynthia Ellis of the Pacific Symphony and Jean Ferandis, a solo musician. I have taught Flute lessons for over 12 years in my home studio, students homes, and online. I have been a music teacher in public and private schools for over 12 years and have taught private lessons on band and string instruments as well as concert band, jazz band and string orchestra.

The first lesson is very relaxed and is about getting to know each student, their interests, goals, and learning styles. From there, I will develop a customized lesson plan that meets the skill level of the student. I typically will use a method book such as Essential Elements for Flute alongside the Rubank Flute Method book. I encourage regular practice, but understand that a student is more motivated to practice if they enjoy the music they are learning which is why it's important for me to find out a student's music interests so that I can provide music excerpts that are relavent to each student while simultaneously teaching fundamental skills. Once I feel skills have been mastered, I introduce solo repertoire and encourage participation in competitions and festivals.
I have taught students from the beginning level, around age 10, up to high school age students. I have taught in elementary, middle and high school band and orchestra programs. I have always felt a call to work with beginning and intermediate level students to help provide a solid foundation for their skills on their instrument and to help spark their passion for learning music.
I believe that a student needs to find a teacher who connects with them and helps them to grow as musicians. It is important to find a teacher who will listen to your interests and help you set goals accordingly. The teacher should provide manageable steps to help every student achieve these goals. It is not enough for a teacher to have the right credentials, they should also have the tools to differentiate instruction and help the student find their own musical voice. A teacher should be patient and also push a student to do their best.
For the last 8 years I have taught band and orchestra at a private K-8 school. The best part of this was that I got to start with my students in the 3rd grade and help them continue in music throughout middle school and hopefully into high school. This past year I had a class of 8th grade students who had been involved in my class for 6 years. As the year was coming to a close, we went to our yearly music festival and the students in this class were so eager to improve their skills that they asked me to take them on a separate festival trip, giving up their weekend commitments to come together and practice for this extra performance. These students gave up lunches and after school activities to work together, sometimes on their own, to prepare for this performance. It was amazing to see how students could be self-motivated to improve themselves and how certain students can step so easily into a leadership role. I was so proud of their hard-work and determination throughout this process and was grateful that I had a part in this special memory.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should consider what their personal goals are and their reasons for learning music on a chosen instrument. A student might not always understand their own learning style, but it is important for a student to understand a teachers educational style and what tools they can bring to each lesson to help the student. The student should also consider what type of styles a teacher utilizes and what type of music a teacher uses to teach.

Details
My lesson times are 30 or 60 minutes. My standard rates are $30 for a 30 minute lesson and $55 for a 60 minute lesson.
