About Kate
I am a caring tutor who is deeply excited about helping students learn and grow. I recently graduated summa cum laude from Grinnell College with a BA in history and German studies and a minor in linguistics. In college, I spent two semesters as a tutor and grader for linguistics classes, and since graduation I've been working part-time as a teaching assistant in the Grinnell German department, running weekly language labs for small groups of beginning and intermediate students and providing one-on-one tutoring at all levels. While most of my teaching experience is at the college level, I also tutored my peers in math and English for two years in high school, and during twelfth grade I created an afterschool class on rainforest wildlife for elementary school students in my district.
My favorite part about tutoring is having students tell me that they now understand a concept they've been struggling with, or watching them gain enthusiasm for a subject. I try to tailor lessons to the needs and interests of my students--when it comes to language learning, for example, I will often include cultural information or activities (cooking, games!) as well as grammar. I start each session by checking in with you, the student, about what you know and what you need help with, and I make sure that stays the focus of the lesson.
