About Dena

First and foremost, I am a Registered Nurse. I can relate to and empathize with your plethora of feelings regarding the challenges of nursing school and NCLEX. I understand the excitement, frustration, fear, apprehension, self-doubt, and any other emotions you have felt as a result of the pressure to succeed. You need a teacher that has been in your position. I cannot emphasize the importance of that enough. There are thousands of tutors (especially online) who advertise that they teach nursing students and NCLEX; however, a large percentage of them are not Registered Nurses. They may be an indispensable part of the health care profession, such as physicians or physician assistants, and I am confident that the majority of them are intelligent and capable of teaching the content, but they have never walked in your shoes. I have. I have walked endless miles in your shoes. Many students already have the knowledge and capacity to perform well in nursing school and NCLEX, but they are not privy to the invaluable test-taking strategies and techniques to pass. These strategies and techniques allowed me to be successful and pass both nursing school and NCLEX on my first attempt. My tutoring focuses on helping my students develop and hone critical thinking skills, strategies to master NCLEX-style questions, common NCLEX traps, and ways to avoid them. If you allow me, I can help you! Together, we can conquer nursing school and/or NCLEX once and for all while preparing you for real life experiences that you will encounter as a new professional nurse.

I have various reasons as to why I love tutoring. Of course, helping students’ meet and/or exceed their short-term and long-term goals and reach their individual potential are among the most rewarding. I especially enjoy and succeed at simplifying difficult concepts for my students. I love playing a role in my students’ “ah-ha” moment. It is incredibly rewarding when a student suddenly understands a previously incomprehensible concept. I also enjoy tutoring because it requires me to be an infinite student, particularly when tutoring nursing and NCLEX students. I am required to stay up to date with current evidence based practice in professional nursing. I love the fact that my students can also teach me, especially given the ever-evolving nursing profession. An effective and successful tutor must also be humble and comfortable with the fact that, at times, their role as a tutor will transition to a student. I absolutely embrace that aspect of tutoring because it challenges and enriches me and helps me grow, both as an individual and professional Registered Nurse.

I can honestly say that, from the beginning of my nursing career, I have always had a passion for teaching. I trained several new graduate nurses at the behavioral health facility that began my career as a professional Registered Nurse. My passion really became evident when I started working on the Medical/Surgical and Orthopedic unit. After nearly one year of employment, my leadership team approached me and recommended that I precept newly-hired Registered Nurses; however, I wanted to ensure that I had a solid nursing foundation and at least two years of experience in my position prior to taking on that responsibility, as I was still novice. I decided to become a Certified Nurse Preceptor and I have been precepting new hires ever since! There is nothing more rewarding than preparing our future generation with confident and competent professional nurses.

I earned my Nursing degree from Keiser University in Florida at the age of 25. I started my nursing career at a behavioral health facility immediately after obtaining my degree. After several months, I transitioned to a Medical/Surgical and Orthopedic unit in my county’s premier tertiary hospital, and I have been employed there for a total of three years. I specialize in Medical/Surgical, Orthopedics and Mental Health nursing; however, I am knowledgeable and more than comfortable teaching all content areas in nursing. I am also a Certified Nurse Preceptor and I have precepted several graduate and seasoned Registered Nurses throughout my professional career.

Initially, my objective is to determine my students’ individual short-term and long-term goals in order to establish an effective study plan for them. Once I have established a unique study plan, I determine my students’ preferred learning styles and ensure that I incorporate opportunities for learning through the use of the identified learning styles. My focus is assisting my students to identify both their strengths and weaknesses and using them to overcome their obstacles and help them accomplish their individual goals. With over a year of valuable tutoring opportunities, I have come to the realization that a lack of confidence in their own knowledge and competency can be a student’s greatest challenge. My ultimate goal is to re-instill their confidence and competence through encouragement and education.

I have tutored students from various backgrounds, including those with test-taking anxiety, both NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN students, international students, first time test takers, and repeat test takers. One aspect I love most about tutoring is having the opportunity to work with students from such diverse backgrounds.

I do not have a standard pricing system for my lessons, as each student comes from a unique walk of life. It is typically negotiable and I try my very best to help each and every student seeking tutoring. I understand and empathize with students facing financial challenges.
