About Thomas

I have over twenty years of teaching and learning experiences, both in the US and internationally. I have worked successfully with hundreds of students with different languages, nationalities, and abilities. My area of expertise is in Social Science, especially but not only, History and Economics, with experience in US standard, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculums.

I have always enjoyed the process of learning, and sharing that process with others. I learn from my students, and I believe they learn from me. It is sometimes hard work to train the brain to actually think, but it is work an individual can take immense pride in. To be a part of that process by which the 'switch' is thrown, and understanding - learning - takes place, is a fantastic experience. The world needs more independent, capable, ecucatged, thinking men and women!

I started teaching after working in many other jobs, including U.S. Government service, and the lodging industry.  My interest in teaching stems from a strong belief that positive improvements in the conditions of the world and in the lives of people are achieved through educated minds. I wanted in whatever way I could to play a part in helping to create those improvements.

I have over 20 years of experience working in schools as both a teacher and administrator.  My experiences have been in the United States, and several foreign countries working in international schools.  My education credentials include degrees from The Ohio State University, and the University of Colorado.  I have also attended/participated/presented at numerous workshops and training seminars, including those designed for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) teachers.

I ask the student what his/her goal is with seeking tutoring help.   Many students seek help with understanding/learning the material for a class.  Others, may want to accelerate their learning.

I try to get a base-line of where the student is currently in their course; what has been accomplished, what the expectations are for the remainder of the course.  I ask the student seeking help to explain, as best they can, what the problem(s) may be with understanding the material.

I have worked with a broad range of students in the US and also in several foreign countries.  Students have been from many different nationalities, speakers of different languages, and different ability levels.  The age range of students have been from middle school-age, to college-age adults.

It is important to work with a teacher that you are comfortable with, and with whom you can develop a sense of trust.  He/she should be not only knowledgeable in the subject area, but have the sort of personality with which you feel at ease.  Of course most importantly is the ability of the teacher to communicate the information, and to help with any difficulties in understanding. A good teacher will not just lecture a student, but guide the student to an enjoyable and successful learning experience.

Over the summer, a former student contacted me via Facebook detailing her experiences as a first year university student.  She related how even though she had 'hated' writing essays and term papers in my classes, she now appreciated how she had learned to organize and present the facts and her arguments in a logical, academic way.  She added that learning about historical processes, and not just facts, had helped her in many of her university courses.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves what seems to be the causes of their seeking tutorial assistance.  Is it a reluctance to see the value/importance of the material?  Is it a problem with how the material is being presented?  Is it a problme with language or terminology?  Is it a problem with feeling unprepared for the level/intensity of the course?  Does the material seem overwhelming especially in regards to time and energy required? Are there study skills/techniques that might be helpful?
