About Tom
With a little over five years of experience as a math tutor at the highschool and college level, I have had the pleasure of coaching students from a plethora of backgrounds in subjects ranging from the rudiments of algebra to the nuances of quantum mechanics. Learning is hard work, which is why I try to emphasize a 'first-principles' approach while working with students, starting with a basic idea and slowly building upon it. My tutoring style is more geared towards a conversational tone rather than a blanket recapitulation of lecture materials as I find that this raises overall student confidence and a general enthusiasm for learning. As a rising physics student at the University of Maryland, College Park, I understand how difficult it is to understand things. Let's work together to figure it all out.
The greatest joy of coaching others in whatever subject they are tackling is seeing that boost of confidence that comes from a flash of understanding. As a group study leader for calculus at my university, I have seen this on a regular basis; that moment of pure confusion transmuting into a euphoric "I get it!" More than just helping others to grasp challenging content, it is my firm belief that every person should understand the rudiments of calculus for its beauty alone. While I work with students, I try to introduce problems that illuminate the charm of these subjects often lacking in the classroom as true learning is more about discovery than memorization. Intellectual persuits are one of the greatest sources of joy in life, which is why I like helping others to embark on an odessey of insight as often as possible.

Typically, I will want to learn about the student as a person first. What are his/her interests or hobbies? What are your thoughts about learning in general? This information may help me tailor questions to the specific student's interests. Then, I try to understand the specifics of my duty by asking about the class/coursework and logistics for my services. I am very flexible and leave as much room for students to make the most out of tutoring as possible; otherwise, I'd just be another teacher, right? The next step is just to dive right into material and confront confusion head-on.
As a tutor, I have worked with both freshman in highschool to seniors in college and math/science-related coursework.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Learning is more of an artform than a science. Learning how to learn is just as important if not more important than any other skill you will learn in the classroom or otherwise. The best way to do this is to practice asking questions, which I find many seeking tutoring have trouble with. If you learn to ask the right questions, you narrow and focus your thinking, making complex subjects more accessible. Therefore, students should develop demanding questions, try to answer them by themselves, and bring any lingering questions to a teacher.
