About Katie
I am a PhD student in chemistry at the University of Chicago who has had four years of tutoring experience. I have tutored students from the early years of kindergarten in basic reading skills up to seniors in high school studying AP chemistry, calculus, and preparing for the ACT and SAT. Additionally, I served for three quarters as a teaching assistant in general chemistry at the university level, hosting 18 person discussion sections and leading weekly lab experiments.
I understand that many factors can play into a student's understanding and excitement for a subject, and I enjoy tapping into a student's interests and background to engage them. It is encouraging to see how students grow throughout a year (or even just an hour) of tutoring. I take a lot of pride in my students for their hardwork and determination to improve their academics and succeed in their goals; whether that be jumping from a C to an A in AP chemistry, or improving their ACT by three points.
I found myself putting too much work into my courses in high school without seeing great payoff and could never find the right stride. In college, I started to realize that I was missing some basic fundamentals and organization techniques. Once I figured this out, I decided it was time to share what I learned!

During our intro-session, I evaluate where a student might be struggling in a particular subject. Sometimes, it turns out that a student lacks some fundamentals to a subject that hinders their understanding in more advanced applications. Other times a student might simply lack the organization skills to keep up in a class. After identifying where a student is struggling, we create a plan to improve.

Katie has worked with my daughter and has helped her improve her understanding of her algebra. She has been wonderful to work with, is flexible with scheduling, and my daughter always looks forward to her tutoring sessions.
Katie is a phenomenal TA. She is responsive to questions
and inquiries, explaining them both in a way that is
understandable and a way that will stimulate further
learning. She is supportive in her feedback and demeanor,
making sure you learn but never making you feel bad. She
is creative and engaging in her discussion sessions, finding
ways that clearly illustrate concepts and further our
understanding. She also uses a great deal of her time
outside of class to help us, providing additional materials to
make sure we have a comprehensive understanding and
the tools we need to succeed and creating review sessions
and additional opportunities to get help if we need itView more recommendations
