About Todd
I bring a fresh, practical perspective to understanding and solving math, physics, and engineering problems. As an engineer, I have a different perspective than many academics and my students find that helpful.
My specialties include high school and college courses (math, physics, and introductory engineering), and standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, MCAT physics).
I have practical experience employing a diverse array of physical principles, including buoyancy, fluid flow, thermodynamics, circuit analysis, nuclear fission, x-ray diffraction, and employing electric and magnetic fields in a plasma.
I have several thousand hours tutoring experience over the past 7 years, primarily but not exclusively online. I have a B.S. in Naval Architecture from the United States Naval Academy, a M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, and an MBA from Florida State University.
I love seeing the spark of excitement that comes when a complex concept suddenly becomes clear to a student.
I am not a teacher; I am an engineer. However, I have found that I love explaining concepts to people and seeing that spark of joy when they grasp a complicated concept that has been giving them trouble. Often, all it takes is a different perspective to make things clear, and I pride myself on being able to explain anything in multiple ways.
I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in interdisciplinary engineering fields, as well as practical experience working with nuclear reactors, ballistic missiles and launch vehicles, and submarines.
I currently work as an engineer in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, where I routinely use physics and engineering principles to troubleshoot the equipment used for x-ray diffraction and physical vapor deposition (ionizing a plasma in a vacuum and shaping electric and magnetic fields to knock atoms off a target and deposit them on a semiconductor wafer).

I work with the student to figure out where the breakdown in understanding is and then I explain those concepts in different ways or frame them in terms of things they already know. My objective is to build student confidence by reminding them that everyone learns differently and we just have to find the approach that works best for them.
I have worked with students across the gambit, from those struggling just to pass, to those being challenged for the first time and afraid of losing their 4.0. My students have ranged in age from middle school to middle age.
Find someone with whom you are comfortable because it will make the sessions much more effective and enjoyable. Also, it is okay to move on to a different tutor if you are not completely satisfied with the tutor you have.
There is no particular event that comes to mind but the two things I value most are the reaction of a student when they first grasp a challenging new concept, and hearing students say they were surprised at how well they did or how easy the course had become. I never tire of that.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what their goal is and how much effort they are willing to put into it. They do NOT need to diagnose the exact sourse of their academic trouble; I can help with that.

Perfect! Todd is the best tutor I have ever had. As a graduate from UC Berkeley, I have been fortunate enough to learn from some of the top science and math professors.
