About Joseph
You and I aren't so different! At the beginning of my math experience, I didn't understand the concepts or get the formulas. However, I was always passionate for problem-solving. Once I figured out that math is like one big problem to be solved, the sky was the limit! Some people just need a little push along the way, which is why I'm dedicating my time to helping students that may be meeting obstacles on their math journey.
I've been tutoring middle school and high school math for five years, and am experienced in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, finance, applied maths, pre-calculus, AP Statistics, and AP (AB/BC) Calculus. Not only have I tutored all of these courses, but many students have come to me failing their classes and together we pushed their grades to B's and A's.
My tutoring method is mainly student-based. I like to learn from the student as well as let them learn from me. All students have different ways they like to learn, whether it be visual, auditory, or physical, and discovering those methods early can be empowering! With my students, I help them learn more than math: they learn how their unique mind works, and I tailor my sessions to their strengths so they feel comfortable in their mind and prepared to learn even when they graduate past my service.
My freshman high school math teacher inspired me to begin teaching. He had a couple of students who were struggling in the course that I was taking, which I was doing well in. Upon asking me if I would be interested in helping them, I discovered my love for teaching. I knew that I understood and was comfortable with the material, but what I believe set me aside was that I was able communicate the material to students in a way that made sense to them, so I started to pursue the passion further.
I am a high school graduate and am currently enrolled at Arizona State University as an Undergraduate in Software Engineering. Although I don't yet have an official teaching certificate, my strength in tutoring comes from my experience. I've been tutoring various math courses for 5+ years, and have established a strategy that I believe helps students learn in general, not just math.

In the first session, I have students outline their expectations of me and what their motivation for tutoring is. I also take the time to get to know the student's learning style. This includes asking them of times that they remember learning something easily, and why that might have stuck with them. We will use their expectations and learning style to create a calender (if the student has a deadline) and establish their perferred intervals of sessions.
I have worked with middle school and high school students, of both genders. The students I've helped range from fond of math to just trying to slip by with a passing grade. I've even helped students with learning disabilities including dyslexia, ADHD, and weakness in executive functioning.
Come to sessions with an open mind. Many students think of math especially as some outside force to be reckoned with, and that can never be understood. This overwhelms the students and closes their mind from potentially discovering a passion for math they didn't know existed in them. If students do their part of coming with an open mind, I will do my best to inform them that math isn't just for super-brained intellectuals, but it is used by everyday people.
As a software engineering student, I like to stay up to date on the latest technologies for students and teachers alike. One of the latest releases is the new iPad mini, which, at an affordable price, is an amazing tool for education. It is portable, works with the Apple Pencil, and is perfect for math students and teachers alike. This isn't sponsored, but I will definitely be picking up one of these devices for myself.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do I learn best? Do I like lectures where I take detailed notes and remember most of the material after that? Do I like talking about the subject in a conversation and teaching others what I learned? Do I like watching videos with visual representations of the concepts? Do I like building the concepts physically? Is there one way I learn better than most?
What do I want out of tutoring aside from just an 'A' in my math class?
Why is math challenging to me? Where did math and I have a disconnect? Is there a specific year, teacher, or concept?
