About Allison

Hello! I'm Ms. Alli, and I have been living my dream of teaching for about 20 years now. I started in my teens, volunteering as a teacher in the children's ministry at church. Now I've got a BA in Early Childhood Education and 7 years of classroom teaching under my belt, on top of many years of working with children in both one-on-one and group settings as a volunteer or private tutor!

I always start with a 90-minute assessment and orientation for both the student and their parent or guardian, which helps me get a feel for the student's preferred learning style and current skills. We then set up a schedule of 1-3 sessions per week and get those goals met!

If it sounds like I might be a good fit for your PreK or Elementary-aged child, I look forward to speaking with you soon!

While the classroom is great, my biggest joy comes from working with students one-on-one. Whether they're struggling with phonics or need an extra challenge, I work with each student and their parents to make sure that our sessions are custom-built to fit their needs. Hearing that a child has learned to love reading, or that they're no longer behind grade level on math, or that they've received an award at school for achievement is one of the best feelings in the world. And let's face it... elementary kids are fun! We sing, we create, we get silly, and we enjoy learning together.

My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Saurer, inspired me to become a teacher. I'd like to say that Ms. Waingar, the teacher I went to for advanced reading, also played a part in that as well! I think the teachers really loved teaching, and they made it fun for us... and that's what made me decide, at the age of 8, that I would grow up and become a teacher. Even when I'm not working with children, I enjoy helping others learn!

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in 2004, and am a certified teacher in the state of Georgia. I started teaching on a volunteer basis at the age of 15 and have enjoyed working both in the classroom and in private settings for about 20 years now!

When I am preparing to work with a new student, I arrange to meet with him/her and the parent(s) beforehand for an orientation and assessment. While the parent completes a profile outlining their child's strengths, weaknesses and goals, I get to know the student's interests and personality. I also perform an assessment to help determine where to focus the tutoring sessions. Once I've shared the results of the assessment with both the student and his/her parent(s), we decide on a tutoring schedule and get things started!

I have worked with students of all sorts. One of my most challenging students was an energetic but gifted 3-year-old. I've also worked with 1st-4th grade students struggling to keep up with their peers. I've taught children whose primary language wasn't English, and I've also taught children with all sorts of special needs. Each one holds a special place in my heart.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of learning do I prefer? Do I learn better when I'm listening to something, like putting math facts to music? Or do I need to act it out with objects or write it down?

Why do I want tutoring? Is it to improve a grade or a skill level, like moving from one reading level to another? Or am I good with most math but get stuck on fractions?

How often will I want tutoring? Depending on needs, some students do best with 3 or more sessions per week. Others only need a little bit of help or enrichment and attend 1-2 times per week.

When you come prepared for that first conversation, it really helps your tutor know how to best help you! And you also won't waste time and money with a tutor whose style or availability doesn't meet your needs.
