About Katharine
Hello. I'm Kitt Pyle. I am a retired, self-contained public school teacher with a lifetime certification. As a public school teacher for several decades, I've met and helped thousands of struggling students from Pre-K through 8th grade.
After retiring, five years ago, I missed the challenge of helping students overcome their various challenges. So I began tutoring, just with word of mouth and a few fliers. This has proved to be very rewarding. I specialize in foundational learning content with students, who are mostly in Pre-K through 8th grade. I do work with a few high school students, for study skills, history, lit as well. I do NOT tutor higher math, science, or SAT, ACT, or GED test prep.
When teaching these skills, I use a hands on manipulative approach. Usually, I teach the skill. The student shows me they understand and can do the task. Then I like to use puzzles, skill focused games, etc to help students master the skills. These are great as they give the student the ability to restructure the content to fit his individual thinking process. It adds the element of fun to the content and allows for flexibility with the content. Most of these games are created by me.
I also teach study skills, STAAR and general test taking skills. I can, and have, helped students with these skills up through 12th grade. I cannot teach the content beyond 8th grade.
I earned a BS degree in Biology. Later I earned an elementary teaching certification in New York State. Then I began my teaching career in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland. After moving to Texas, I did most of my teaching in Round Rock ISD and Pflugerville ISD.
During my teaching career, I worked with an RRISD middle school as their Math/Science Fair Coordinator. We were the top middle school in our area for four of the five years that I held that position. I was blessed to serve on the Austin Area Math/ Science Fair board for several years.
Then for five years, I led a team of high performing Science Olympiad students in Pflugerville ISD. Upon returning to RRISD, I helped with a science club that actively worked with Round Rock City Council to establish a permanent recycling center.
Outside of teaching, I was a Girl Scout Leader for seven years, a Girl Scout trainer for two years, chairman for my son's Cub Scout Pack. I enjoy gardening, painting, Arts and Crafts, and my children and grandchildren. Recently, I have begun raising chickens.
I look forward to helping many more students achieve great success with their academic endeavors.
I started teaching swimming as a high school student. Then I was a camp counselor for several years.
When I graduated from college labs would not hire me because I was too highly educated.
So I had to regroup. I enjoyed telling people and working with young people, so I turned to teaching.
It has been a very rewarding and fulfilling career.
I am a certified public school teacher for all subjects for grades 4-8. I taught in Baltimore, Maryland, Round Rock ISD, and Pflugerville ISD.
I taught in Ponderosa child Care center. There I worked with 2 yr Olds.
I tutored pre-K through 8th grade students at Mathnasium in Georgetown, TX
For 13 years I taught 2- 4 year old at my church.

I like to get to know my student first. What are their likes or dislikes? What is their favorite class, favorite learning activity, etc? Then I like to explore why we are tutoring. What do they hope to get out of tutoring? How do they think I can best help them. I, also, talk with the parents to get their perspective.
All of this helps me know how to tailor my teaching for that student. Most students learn best when they are enjoying a subject. So I will begin with what the student knows, or teach a skill, some knowledge, then create one or more practice activities to reinforce the learning. Often the practice activity if a manipulative game focused solely on the particular skill. As time progresses we will add to that skill harder more sophisticated problems or skills. Students get so focused on the concept and working the necessary skills to win that they forget about not liking the subject. They like the subject better and that the work is easier.

Details
Usually I charge $50/hrs. This helps pay for the materials that are used to develop the manipulatives. It, also, helps pay when I find another excellent resource online developed by another teacher.
