About Lisa
I have a long and diverse educational background and can help students with a variety of different subjects, including high school math, language arts, English as a second language and standardized test preparation.
I love helping students succeed and being able to meet their individual learning needs. That can be difficult to do with a group, which is why I prefer individual tutoring.
I was invited to become a teaching assistant for a course during my junior year in college, and I discovered that I loved helping people learn. After graduating, I took a job teaching English overseas, then completed a Ph.D. at Stanford and taught at the college level for about a decade. For the last 15 years, I’ve been helping students prepare for the GED and other standardized tests like the SAT.
I have a Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford University as well as a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I also have many years of on-the-job training and experience preparing students for all subject areas on the GED (Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts) as well as other standardized tests like the SAT.

The first step is always to get to know the student, including their goals, learning needs and study habits and how they prefer to learn (visually, hands-on, by listening, etc.) After that, we settle on materials and a schedule that will work for both of us.
Most of my work has been with teens and adults studying at the high school and college levels.
Don’t be shy about voicing your needs and concerns, both at the beginning of a relationship and throughout the teaching and learning process. Let your teachers know what’s working and not working so that they can adjust their methods to you.
I get my greatest joy from seeing students succeed on tests and earn diplomas, especially when they’ve had to work hard to make it happen. I love helping my students see that they are a lot smarter and more capable than they initially believed.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

· How much time and effort am I willing to devote to achieving these goals?
· Do I have a deadline I need to meet? How flexible is that deadline?
· What is my preferred learning style? Do I prefer to read, listen, study diagrams or drawings or learn using a more “hands on” method?

Details
The first session is always free. After that, my prices range from $25 to $40 a session depending on the subject matter and how much work is required in between sessions.
