About Allison

Hi! My name is Allison Aprile and I am a Computer Science and Mathematics tutor, with other areas of interest in Music. I recently graduated from Temple University with a B.S. Data Science (Computational Analytics) and will be continuing on to a M.S. Machine Learning at Stevens Institute of Technology this fall. I also work full-time as a Jr. Data Scientist in the Jersey City area. I have been tutoring for the past six years, including working as a Computer Science/Mathematics tutor for Temple University and private tutoring throughout Philadelphia. You can check out more of my credentials at (concealed information)

For my service, I put emphasis on being flexible with the students' needs and personalities. Before tutoring, I like to get an understanding of who the student is, rather than just what they can do, to make sure we are a good fit and that my approach can help them. For that reason, I offer the first lesson for free - while we will go over the topics of interest, areas of difficulty, etc., I like to use this time to get to know the student better. I try my best to foster a 'no-pressure' environment; my approach is always focused on getting someone comfortable with the topics, rather than just seeing it through that they get every question right. I think mistakes are important - I never get mad or frustrated if something is wrong, because mistakes are the best way to learn!

In terms of flexibility, I know that every student learns differently, so I try my best to teach to every student differently. There have been countless times in my past tutoring positions where I watched my coworkers (and the professors alike) repeat techinques on students that clearly did not work. If something is not working out, I try my best to try everything else until I find a teaching style that fits.

As someone who was very shy in school, I understand how intimidating it can be to ask for help in the classroom environment. Also, through my tutoring experiences, I have learned that all students learn differently, a lot of the times in a way that is not compatible with their school teacher's methods. I realized that most of the time, someone loses confidence in their abilities because they feel like they are not 'smart enough' or 'good enough' at something, when in reality, it just wasn't presented in a way that makes sense to them. I love being able to meet and learn about new students, and especially helping them to see topics in a new light - perhaps one that can even make them love the subjects as much as I do! It is rewarding to see someone build their confidence and become excited about something that once dragged them down.

In high school, I volunteered as a mathematics tutor after class. I helped a variety of students and really enjoyed being able to show the fun, applicable side of math rather than theory. This translated well to my college tutoring ventures, where I worked for two years as an official Temple Mathematics/Computer Science tutor. I worked over 20 hours a week helping peers and other students with a variety of topics. I specialized in Calculus and Machine Learning applications, although I am comfortable tutoring most topics of middle school through college level courses.

In my free time, I privately tutored students around the Philadelphia area in math.

I graduated from Temple University in May 2020 with a B.S. Data Science (Computational Analytics), and will continue on to Stevens Institute of Technology for a M.S. Machine Learning. Throughout the course of my education, I have worked with multiple sectors of mathematics (algebra, calculus, statistics, probability, etc.) and computer science (Python, C, Java, Javascript, algorithms, machine learning, data mining, etc.). I specialize in machine learning applications, but have extensive experience with other coding as well.

I have been working as a Jr. Data Scientist at an insurance company since July 2020, where I am applying my knowledge in a business setting. In college, I worked over 20 hours a week as a mathematics and computer science tutor, as well as tutored students privately around the Philadelphia area.

For a new student, I really emphasize getting familiarized before teaching. As someone who has worked with a variety of students, I realize that all students learn differently and it is important to get an understanding of their personalities, experience, motivation, etc. before jumping right into a lesson. I like to make sure the student is comfortable with me. I offer my first lesson free as a trial run, where we will go over some topics and areas of difficulty, but moreso get to know each other and see if it is a good fit.

It is very important to me to get to know the student because it helps me during the lessons. I am a big fan of real-life applications, especially for students who are not fond of the subject or do not see the 'point'. More times than not, a student is held back by their disinterest in a subject more than their capabilties.

I am excited to work with all students of all levels and get them excited about learning! :)

I have worked with a variety of students, ranging from middle school to college age. I have tutored most typical mathematics subjects, including: basic math, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus (for high school, AB/BC Calculus, or Calculus I-III for college), statistics, probability, and Computer Science math (binary numbers, probability, etc). For Computer Science, I have only worked with college students in topics including: Python, C, Java, Javascript, Data Structures, Probability, Algorithms, Machine Learning, Data Mining, and other Data Science principles.

I would suggest finding someone who matches your personality and, of course, has the credentials to help you. For instance, I love making jokes and having fun while tutoring; I feel that it lightens the mood and takes the pressure off of session to 'be perfect'. I am also a firm believer that mistakes are good! While this personality may help some students thrive, maybe others require a more formal approach, which is understandable. That's why I offer a trial session; I want to make sure it's a good fit!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"How would I go about solving this problem?" This is the #1 question I ALWAYS ask my students before helping them. It helps me to understand their train of thought and highlights potential problem areas. Usually, I find that students understand the problem and have a solid way of solving it, but just need confirmation that their approach is on the right track.

"What parts of this problem do I understand and which do I not?" This helps me to get an idea of your strengths and weakness, and how to go about the problem.

"Did I try my best?" :)

My first lesson will always be free, because I feel it is important to get to know the student first and make sure it is a good fit. Afterwards, I charge $40 per hour.
