About Rachel
I am a recent college graduate so I am up to date on new curriculum being taught in schools and I have new and exciting ideas to help students learn better and comprehend their subject matter. I have been working with kids for almost ten years now, whether it be in a classroom, babysitting, nannying, teaching dance classes, or just being around them.
I love seeing the expression on a child's face when they finally grasp the concept of what they're trying to figure out. It's very rewarding knowing that I was able to teach them something and help them understand things that may have been difficult or confusing beforehand.
I have always loved interacting with students and when I was younger I loved to play school and "teach" my classroom at home. I fell in love with the idea of being a teacher and once I started volunteering in classrooms I knew that's what I was meant to do.
I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, I am certified to teach Grades pre-k through 4. I successfully completed my student teaching in the third grade, and during college I have field experiences in preschool, kindergarten, third and first grade. I spent about a year working at the same preschool I did my field experience in and in high school I was a teachers aide for a first grade classroom for half the day. While I was in high school I taught dance classes for three years to children ages 3-8 and I babysat and nannied several children of the same age range as well.

Before diving into the subject matter I like to spend a little bit of time with each student. I like to figure out what their likes a dislikes are, how they like to learn, what things they have troubles with, and then a little bit about whatever they want to tell me so that they feel comfortable working with me. With this information, I can formulate a plan for what would work best to help them with the subject they struggle with.
I have worked with students from ages 3-9. I have done field experiences, student teaching, babysitting, dance instruction, one on one work, and more. During my student teaching I had two students in my classroom that had behavioral disabilities and I had to learn how to incorporate that into my teaching and how to best reach these students to help them learn.
When you go into a tutoring session, have an open mind and be yourself. I want to get to know the real you and I want to accommodate you so that you can learn the subject matter you are struggling with.
One of my students during my student teaching simply could not grasp the concept of fractions. She would get very frustrated and want to give up and thought she was "too dumb" to ever understand fractions. I worked with her a few times at the end of the day, during our morning warm up, and sometimes even at lunch or recess. When it came time to take the test, she was extremely nervous because she thought she was going to fail. Turns out, this student ended up getting a B+ on her test and she was so proud of herself and she came and hugged me and told me she never would've been able to do fractions if it weren't for my help. Moments like these are the reasons I got into teaching.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask yourself 3 questions.
1. Do I need extra help with this subject?
2. What would help me learn the material?
3. Am I willing to put in the extra work to learn?

I do not have a standard rate for my students. I understand that different families have different financial situations and I wouldn't want my rate to keep a student from getting the help that they need. That being said, I typically charge anywhere from $40-$60 but can be flexible if absolutely necessary.
