About Melba
Hello and welcome to my tutoring page!
My M.Ed. has allowed me to harness my first love which is helping others understand things that are difficult for them. My ZIP Code says Salem, OR - so if you're in shouting distance and need help understanding math and English concepts or any other subject, let's talk!
I've been training others for 15 years and nothing is more important to me than your success. I will ask you a few questions first because your answers will tell me what you understand so I know where to start working. I am always on the lookout for innovative ways to make English, Math and science easier to learn. I look forward to working with you!

Unfortunately, one year ago, I suffered a catastrophic stroke and am not mobile - I have had great success working with students over Google Meet. I would love to assess where your student's foundation is unstable, and the assessment is complimentary. Let's start with an assessment.
I started out as a client in a displaced homemaker program, advanced to the Executive Assistant then became the Training Facilitator of 40-50 clients per week. I've been passionate about learning and training ever since.
Most recently, I was a substitute teacher for various K-12 subjects including English, science and multiple levels of math.

I like to get to know students by finding out what they like most because it helps me tailor the leaning experience to make it more applicable to their life.
I've worked with very diverse students from K through adult learners. I have a gift for getting students to think out loud so I can help them connect what they know to what they're learning.
When you're searching for a tutor, seek one who has had to persevere in life. It gives them a more patient outlook when you're struggling with a difficult concept.
Finishing my M.Ed. facing the pressure of a layoff taught me that education is also about resilience and perseverance.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Be honest about how much time you are giving to your studies - knowledge will not seep into your brain by osmosis.
2. Consider your teacher's teaching style ... if you are not learning the information, perhaps a tutor will help you get clear on the basics which drive real understanding.

Perfect! Melba had a quick and proficient way of connecting with our daughter. She was able to make the idea of learning math, more like "knowing" math; getting the facts down and losing the frustration that comes with learning. Would recommend her in a heart beat.

My son was diagnosed 12 years ago with ADHD when in kindergarten and has always despised math. You can imagine the problems we've had with his school where anything math was concerned. Rivers of tears for him and many sleepless nights for me.
After 3 weeks of working with Ms. Mel, he reported to me that he actually "liked" math now. I could not believe my ears! She helped him relearn the basics and move on to complex problems, all of which he retains to this day. It was miraculous ...
She is an AMAZING, patient, steady, structured teacher who expects that each one of her students will get it once everything clicks. Her goal is to make math enjoyable by building the student's confidence and boy, does she deliver!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND Ms. Mel!My son is a fifth grader so of course something’s has changed. One thing she tackled was building his confidence and starting with some mental math.
