About Orren
I have always prided myself on following the simple rule: "If you can't explain a concept in simple terms, you do not understand it yourself." My main goal as a tutor is to be able to communicate concepts in Mathematics and Computer Sciences to students of a wide range of levels from Middle School into High School and beyond, by first trying to understand how each individual student learns and then translating the information best to that student's way of thinking. I emphasize helping students gain more than just a surface level comprehension of the material, by trying to nurture a deep intuition for the subject so that their abilities can extend beyond the current topic at hand and they feel capable of understanding new topics with similar ease.
I graduated from Rutgers University- New Brunswick in 2020 with a B.S. in both Computer Science and Mathematics and a cumulative 3.90 GPA.
I have been teaching computer programming since 9th grade. I was an assistant instructor at the Dwight Englewood Summer Connections program for multiple years, helping to teach programming and game design in languages such as Python and C++.
I have tutored in multiple topics in mathematics including but not limited to Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus I and Calculus II. I also have a strong understanding of higher level mathematical topics such as Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Real Analysis, and more. This strong basis in Mathematics allows me to take many unique angles in explaining topics to students and allows me to provide an intuition for the subject that extends beyond rote memorization of ideas into a deeper understandning of the subject.
I have also been programming for 10 years. In that time I have gained a mastery of a number of programming languages including Python, Java, Javascript, C, C++, and C# and have gained exposure to a variety of other languages like R, MatLab, and Haskell. This wide and varied exposure to programming languages along with my degree in Computer Science have given me a deeper understanding for the underlying concepts of programming that extend beyond an individual language, which I find invaluable both for my own abilities as a programmer, but also as a teacher of the subject.
I was also a chess instructor for multiple years for young students at the ICA Chess Camp located in Teaneck, NJ. I taught students from a wide array of ages from 5 years old to 14 years old complex problem solving skills and proactive thinking, while tailoring my teaching to each student's level of understanding of the game and strengths and weaknesses as a student.
Most recently, I taught a Data Science Bootcamp at Rutgers University- New Brunswick, in which we communicated high level topics in data science and machine learning to college students using Python. These topics varied from linear and logistic regression to neural networks and deep learning, along with explanations in data collection, exploratory data analysis, and model validation. I have also, throughout my time in college run many review sessions for many of my classes including Systems Programming, Differential Equations, and more. I also have frequently done individual tutoring sessions for fellow students in computer science and mathematics for various classes.
Through all of my experience, the most important lessons I have learned are not in the subjects themselves, but how I communicate them. The most important thing in any teaching relationship is ensuring that the information and understanding that is in my mind is translated to fit the way of thinking and level of comprehension of the student. That has been and continues to be of the highest priority.
To me, the most rewarding thing about teaching is watching students gain confidence in their own abilities through my help. I never want to feel like a crutch to a student. I want to facilitate and catalyze a student's ability to learn on their own and feel confident in doing so. Being able to nurture critical thinking skills and helping students ask the right questions allows them to go on to new topics on their own and feel empowered to do so. To me, no subject is too hard to understand. All it takes is the right perspective and any subject is within reach of understanding. My goal as a teacher is to demonstrate that that truly is possible by going deeply into what it is that a student struggles with. I feel most satisfied when I see that a student does not just understand the subject the way I do, but develops a unique perspective on the subject that only they are capable of having. When I see that in a student, I know I have made an impact.
