About Maya

I am a college student at Rochester Institute of Technology with a passion for math. I have always loved helping and teaching others. I have a lot of experience with teaching and as I was a student tutor throughout all of high school, helping students ace subjects such as Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. In addition to being academic, I am also an artist, which helps me make my lessons creative, relatable, and digestible!

I have taken, and had a 95+ grade in, every math course that I teach. I was in my school's Honor Society and gained my community service hours by tutoring fellow peers. I also have experience teaching artistic classes to younger children.

First, I would like to see a student's course syllabus or curriculum. Depending on how much prior knowledge a course requires, I will typically either have a review class or assign a worksheet to get a sense of general areas a student needs to review and strengthen in order to have an optimal understanding of future material. I also like to give a survey to see how a student learns best, whether it be visually, orally, etc. As time goes on, I like to keep my students a little bit ahead of their class curriculum. This way, they always feel extra prepared when in class, so that they do well not only on exams but exemplify full understanding during participation, which is an overlooked part of a typical teacher's grading policies. However, I understand every student has their own pace, so I always adjust and personalize my lesson structure and pace to make sure my student develops a long-term understanding of the material.

Look for a teacher that you connect with, and who takes the time to understand you as a student. Everyone is different and requires varying methods of learning, which is the biggest flaw in the current education system. The more you connect with your teacher, the easier it will be to connect with the content as well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about how you believe you best process information. What really helps you solidify concepts in your mind? Is it seeing visual representations? Reading text? Talking through a concept?

Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. Who are you as a learner? How do you need to improve? What skills do you already have that we can use to your advantage?

Due to COVID and the financial burdens that come with it, I would like to personally conference with my student or their guardian to set a price that is comfortable and reasonable for both parties.
