Begin with a shorter session to get to know the student, and see how compatible we are as an academic team. For students still in grade school/living with parents, I like to get to know the parents as well.
Mostly elementary school students, but I am more than happy to work with older students as well.
I would definitely be most concerned with comparability between the student and tutor; a teacher can be the smartest there is, but a poor relationship with the student downgrades quality of instruction.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I like to know where the difference is between what is difficult for a student versus what is boring for them. Sometimes these are hard to distinguish between, and both can lead to poor academic progress. Students who are excited to learn but have some difficulty with class content often fare better than those who are naturally gifted but are bored or not putting forth effort.
