About Catherine

As an avid Math and English student, I am excited to share these subjects with students! I believe in needs-based and understanding-based tutoring with a focus on problem solving and building conceptual backgrounds instead of rote memorization. As a current college senior, I like to give context to younger students about the applications the subjects they are studying will have in the future, and can also give students study strategies that will be effective for their upcoming college and AP classes. I look forward to working with you!

As someone who has always loved learning and education, I know how fulfilling it is to turn in work that you are proud of, and how validating it is to get back a good grade for that work. It is always so amazing to help other students achieve that fulfillment!

I began peer tutoring through a club in high school during my Sophomore year, mostly helping other students with their writing. I continued peer tutoring all throughout high school, branching out to several other topics. When I got to college, I signed up for a similar program of peer tutoring there as well, and enjoyed it so much that I branched out to professional tutoring during the second semester of my Freshman year.

I am a college senior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Applied Math, so I have ample experience in both academic writing and high level mathematics.

I have also been peer tutoring since high school, and began tutoring professionally my Freshman year of college.

I typically begin by assessing the goals of the student with whom I am working. It is very important that both of us are on the same page about what it is we are trying to achieve together. From there, we will develop a plan for how often we will meet, what the student should do in between meetings, and what we will work on together in our sessions together.

In math, I have worked with students ranging from 6th grade to college-level Statistics. In English, I typically work with high school and college-level students. I also offer help with editing and drafting for academic writing of any discipline.

Many students can be scared to communicate exactly what it is they are looking for in a tutor, or to articulate when the tutor is explaining things in a way that doesn't quite make sense to them. I (and most tutors) are here to help you, so please don't hesitate to tell us exactly what we need-- this will enable us to help you as best as we can!

Last year, I began tutoring a student in her Junior year of high school. She had always enjoyed English, but this was her first year taking an AP-level English class (AP Language). Her difficulty was coming from the timed essays from the class, and not being able to fully answer the prompt in that short amount of time. Together, we worked on outlining, planning, and tricks that would enable her to articulate her ideas succinctly. It was so amazing to see how her confidence as a writer grew over the course of the semester, and we were both so excited when she earned a 5 on her AP exam in the Spring!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Math:

What specifically about the concept of difficulty is causing me confusion?

When the concept is being explained to me, where am I losing track of the subject matter?

What study methods/explanations have helped me with similar concepts in the past?

What is my learning style?

What are my goals for working with a tutor?

English/Writing:

Am I working to add clarity, succinctness, structure, or something else into my writing?

What kinds of texts do I have difficulty reading or comprehending?

What strategies do I have to efficiently comprehend texts and are these strategies effective?

What are my strategies for finding reputable and peer-reviewed sources for academic writing?

What am I looking for in a tutor (editing, help with drafting, help with research, etc.)
