About Jim

I am an MD from Australia that has recently moved to the US (February 2017) to explore the American healthcare system, culture, and everything that the USA has to offer. I am currently bootstrapping a new company but have time to commit to one of my lifelong passions - teaching.

I have a long history of teaching elementary, high school, and college children back in Australia and have done so since 2006. This includes both individual tutoring as well as classes of up to 15 children, and have one-on-one tutored over 50 children between 2008 - 2014 whilst participating in full-time college study (MD). I would be happy to provide references if required.

In Australia, our academic scoring system for completion of high school is known as the "UAI" or University Admissions Index. I completed high school in 2008 with a UAI of 99.85, which placed me in the top 0.15% of the national cohort and would be happy to provide certification if requested.

While the US system is different in terms of content, mathematics principles are universal, and a quick discussion with your child will help me ascertain where their weaknesses are and help formulate the strategies that I've used to help them overcome difficult topics such as calculus, logarithms, quadratic functions etc.

Australia: Senior High School (Year 12) - 4 Unit Maths aka Maths Extension 2

Topics in 4 Unit Maths included:

- Calculus (incl advanced integration)

- Complex Numbers

- Conics

- Volumes

- Mechanics

The most effective thing that has worked for me is finding out where your difficulties lie.

Is it the raw understanding of the topic (fundamentals)?

Is it application of the topic?

Is it the lateral thinking component (advanced problem solving)?

To all three, there is a way to approach it using a "First-principles" approach (see (concealed information) which I commonly used during medical training and practice, and applies to any STEM subject.

I emphatically enjoy seeing students improve dramatically over a very short period of time. Nothing brings me more satisfaction than watching students whom once feared a specific subject discover they have a natural talent.

I discovered I had a natural talent for teaching during my first jobs as a tutor for a tutoring college whilst in middle school (2006). I was responsible for teaching a group of fifteen 4th grade students. From there I gradually moved up to middle school, high school and college kids.

I have an over 10 year history of tutoring, ranging from elementary students to medical students. Through these years I self-discovered the knowledge spectrum and have since found it a highly effective technique to pinpointing students' weaknesses.

As a practicing physician in Australia, I was also responsible for the education of junior doctors on complex medical concepts including physiology, anatomy, clinical governance and treatment / follow-up plans.

Learning a subject lies on a spectrum. On one end is fundamental understanding, the other, mastery of the subject. Along this spectrum are three key stages

1. Do they have a raw understanding of the topic? (fundamentals)

2. Can they apply said concept to standard questions? (intermediate)

3. Can they utilize this concept in a multi-step problem that requires integration of multiple topics/concepts? (mastery)

When I work with my students, I first want to understand where they think the problem lies and this can be found by either asking them, or giving them increasingly difficult problems to solve. Most commonly, students are stuck between Stages 1 and 2 - they understand the concept but have difficulty in its application. This typically suggests a weak foundation, so I will reteach a concept adapted to the student's learning style (visual? aural? kinesthetic?).

College, high school, middle school, elementary

Some students are naturally gifted and would push them with harder questions.

I have also worked with struggling students. In these circumstances, it is important to understand why they are struggling. Is it the teaching style? The social circumstances the student is in? Is the subject not in line with the student's future aspirations?

As a student, the most important element of a teacher is their ability to communicate and listen. You will never learn effectively from a teacher that imposes his or her way of doing things when it does not work for you. If the teacher cannot adapt to your learning style, then you need to find a new one ASAP.

Also, as a student, you must understand your learning style too. It will help us as teachers create an effective learning plan for you. For info on learning styles, look here: (concealed information)

One of my fondest moments is deciding to quit my clinical career in Australia, pack up and move to the USA. I am an adventurous and tenacious person, and typically do not back down from challenges.

While it has been challenging to settle into a new country with no immediate friends or family, I have learnt a lot about myself and will continue to forge my path forward.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What goals do you have in mind about your subject?

2. What are my strengths in this subject?

3. What are my weaknesses in this subject?

4. How much time am I willing to dedicate to improving in this subject?

5. What learning strategies have worked for me in other subjects?
