About Leigh

I have experience teaching Spanish from 3rd grade to undergraduate levels, in private home settings and in the classroom as a twice-weekly discussion section instructor of Spanish I and II in Washington University in St. Louis' Romance Languages Department.

I am a lover of foreign languages (I've studied French, formal Arabic, and Hebrew in addition to Spanish), and am an empathetic, caring teacher. I understand learning differences and the challenges they elicit, and work to ensure each student feels valuable, confident, and hopeful in the pursuit of their goals.

Education and Immersive Experience:

I received my minor in Spanish from Washington University in St. Louis and lived in Granada, Spain for six months within a homestay of native Granadinos where I attended the Universidad de Granada.

Other Professional Experience Using Spanish:

I have served as a Spanish/English medical interpreter and case worker at a medical clinic in downtown St. Louis, Missouri where I worked with a clientele of primarily uninsured Spanish-speaking residents of our community. Here I trained volunteer interpreters and assessed volunteer candidates' language abilities. I also completed an internship in which I translated mental health advocacy program descriptions to Spanish to broaden the reach of the nation's largest Mental health grassroots organization, NAMI.

I love spreading the knowledge of this language, as it gives English speakers an important opportunity to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps within our communities. The Spanish language is also simply a beautiful one, and by using it, we are engaging a part of our brains we would otherwise leave dormant if we didnt venture outside the confines of our monolinguistic culture. :)

I started my private tutoring business in my hometown in Pennsylvania in the summer of 2014 after my freshman year of college. After informally tutoring my undergraduate peers in Spanish as I started my undergraduate coursework of my Spanish minor, I decided to take the knowledge back to my hometown to see if I could continue the work their. I consistently saw four students throughout this summer, and eventually became a TA at WashU where I was responsible for teaching twice-weekly discussion sections of Spanish I and II for three semesters.

Spanish Teaching Experience:

I've taught in a variety of settings and loved and learned from every one:

I started teaching Spanish in the summer of 2014, and have done so in 1:1 and group settings in private homes, at university, and as a Subsection Instructor at Washington University in St. Louis's Romance Languages Department where I taught discussion sections of 5-10 undergraduates solely in Spanish twice-weekly, focusing on vocabulary and conversational skillsets. I am seeking to take these skills to the online classroom or to homes within Northwest DC for the near future!

When I meet a new student and/or family, I seek to learn the following:

1) Who is the student and how does the student learn best? (Ex: What are their interests in/outside of school? How do they learn best/do they have any particular learning needs?)

2) What are the student's academic and linguistic goals?

(Ex: Are they seeking to pass a class, or to get an A in said class? Do they need help with something in particular such as verb conjugations, or do they want to broaden/practice their language skills across the board of writing, speaking, and listening?)

3) What is the desired frequency and duration of tutoring sessions?

I have taught Spanish to students from 3rd grade to the undergraduate level and open to teaching students of all ages and levels!
