About Troy
Although playing trumpet requires a great deal of patience and discipline, I have seen how incredibly rewarding playing an instrument can be, both firsthand and from the way my students talk about it. There is always more to discover about music, and I hope to unlock each student's sense of wonder and dedication towards improving not only their playing ability, but their overall character as a person as well.
I have performed in concert, jazz, and professional ensembles on a variety of instruments for the past 14 years, most notably the Riverside City College Marching Band from 2012 to 2016. Beyond that, I have several years of experience in working with students both in private and classroom settings to expand their musical knowledge and their trumpet performance skills. I pride myself in taking a personal investment in the students I teach, and I wish for their successes as if they were my own.
I cherish the transformative nature of studying music, whether it be overcoming social anxiety through being part of a community of other musicians, or earning better grades and test scores by applying the discipline students have learned by playing an instrument. Regardless of a student's desire or ability to continue playing their instrument later in life, the positive impacts of their musical studies unfailingly creates more rounded, more driven, and more joyful individuals.
In High School, I took on duties within the Marching Band as Trumpet Section leader, which motivated me to assist the other trumpet players in improving their playing ability. After graduating High School, I operated as a private trumpet tutor while also taking classes at Riverside City College.
I have studied trumpet performance for 14 years, and have received professional lessons from Tammy Chaney, and Rich Chasin of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. I have also worked closely with the band directors from many different educational music programs, including Oak Hills High School, Riverside City College, Creative Brain Learning LLC., and Grand Terrace High School, where I assisted in teaching marching technique, fundamental music knowledge, brass playing fundamentals, and trumpet playing technique. I have performed with college level jazz and classical ensembles, as well as in independent music groups throughout Southern California. I continue my own studies in trumpet performance so that I can better assist my students.

On a first visit, I like to get to know a new student better by asking about their own musical background - when did they start playing, why, and do they plan to continue playing music as a hobby or turn it into a career? These questions will help to tailor my teaching style so that I can provide each student with the best instruction experience possible.
My most recent student was a beginner who had a vision impairment. I guided him through the very basics of playing trumpet and music fundamentals, both online via distance learning and in person at his school. In the past, I have had students of varying age ranges and levels of progress, from beginner to advanced trumpet students.
Understand that playing an instrument - especially, a brass instrument, and especially trumpet - requires a great deal of personal patience and dedication. Even the most legendary trumpet players will attest that missing just one day of practicing their instrument can undo several months of conditioning to be able to play their instrument to an acceptable standard. If a student is serious about wanting to learn how to play and to carry that skill with them throughout the rest of their life, they will also need enough discipline to ensure they play their instrument for at least 30 minutes every day. It will also be helpful to know the correct way to warm up on your instrument before performing, and how to efficiently warm down after playing for a long time. Knowing all these things will also help in student-teacher situations, as their tutor's expectations and ability to teach will be higher if the student has done everything required of them on their own to be successful.
With my visually impaired student, I supervised his journey from being a novice to being able to march and perform with his high school marching band. He has improved tremendously just over the course of two years, despite having braces and a learning disability. I am eager to see how his future unfolds, since his passion for music is unlike that of any student I have had before.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The more specific a student can be, the better. Playing trumpet involves the use of many different parts of the body, including the lungs, stomach, throat, tongue, and lips. All parts require very delicate instruction in order to avoid forming bad habits and even long-term health afflictions. Being honest with your instructor about how you feel while playing your instrument and whether or not you might be doing something wrong is important to address in order to expedite your progress.
