About Julie
Orton Gillingham Licensed tutor, 10 years as special educator. Intensive reading and writing tutor. Social skills, life skills, and therapeutic skills teacher. Also available for homework help and college application preparation. I am able to support parents of special needs children with decoding IEPs and understanding support services. I believe in a holistic approach to learning, and use multi-sensory strategies to get the most from students.
I love working with students and their families in order to make learning a positive experience. I love watching curiosity and motivation grow in a student. I'm passionate about finding out what makes a student tick and building an educational platform that highlights that interest. I also enjoy advocating for my students needs and have several years of experience and expertise to support this.
I started teaching as a graduate assistant while getting my masters. I absolutely love working with young people and developing a trusting bond. I also love to inspire kids to love learning and to embrace curiosity.
I have been a special education teacher for 10 years. In addition I have taught at the graduate level. I have a B. A. and Master's in history. I am also an expert at evaluations and diagnostics.

My process is student need driven. If I am using Orton Gillingham, it is based on deficit recovery. If I am tutoring for homework help, it is based on area of struggle, as well as intensity of work presented. Social skills and life skills are developed from students level of development and learning needs. Social Skills and life skills development may include community based learning as well.
I've worked with a collection of neurodiverse students in my years as a techer. I've worked with students with specific learning disabilities in all areas, students with intense social emotional needs, studens with ASD, students with intense sensory needs, students with intellectual impairments, students with ADHD, students with intense medical needs, reluctant learners, students with school avoidance issues, and general education students as well.
Find someone with real experience in the school system, someone who knows teacher expectations and understands the MA DESE standards. Find someone you fit with, too. All tutors have different approaches, be conscientious of what works for you.
I have a very positive outlook on life, so there are many events I am fond of. I am looking forward to an upcoming conference on the co-occurrence of mathematics disabilities with SLD in reading.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to be aware of who they are. Understand your strengths AND your weaknesses (we all have them). Anticipate your needs that a tutor can support. If you are highly organized, great, if not, ask your tutor for ways that they can help you stay organized. Finally, make sure your tutor aligns with your needs. Don't go to a reading tutor for geometry, and don't go to a math tutor for an essay.
