About Steve
SeaAffinity offers all levels of sailing instruction, from beginner to advanced, on our boat or yours. Steve is a US Coast Guard licensed captain and a US Sailing Master Instructor Trainer. We offer group lessons, or private lessons where you learn at your own speed.
The best thing about teaching sailing is that I get to combine my two passions - sailing and helping people learn.
We got started with teaching our own kids, not just sailing, but home schooling. We then began taking friends saiing and teaching them. Steve was employed teaching sailing and running a sailing center and Suzanne was employed as a race coach.
Because we are partially self-taught but have also taken lessons ourselves, we are able to provide a multifaceted approach. Steve is a US Coast Guard licensed captain, but both Steve and Suzanne are US Sailing certified instructors and coaches. We have home schooled our kids through highschool and sent them all off to college. Steve has been recruited by US Sailing to work with their National Faculty to develop training courses and write training material. Steve is also a Master Instructor Trainer for US Sailing, meaning that he trains the people who train instructors

When we meet with a new student, we think it is most important ask what the student wants to accomplish. Sure, you want to learn to sail, but do you want to just sail around on short day sails, or is you end goal to sail a boat in the Islands? Knowing this can help us tailor our teaching to meet your goals. It also helps us direct you to the right classes or private lessons.
We get to meet and work with all kinds of students. We have provided training for groups of international students. We have worked with kids and adults. We have been able to help some sailors brush up on their skills so they had the confidence to sail in the Caribbean. Some of our best students have been inner-city youth that were given an opportunity to try something new.
Students should look at both the instructor and the courses offered. Does the instructor have the experience and national level training and certifications? Is the Instructor properly trained and insured? Is the boat they are using properly registered and insured?
Next, they should look for an easy entry point. Before committing to a long intense lesson, students should consider an introduction type class to get to know the instructor and program.
One of our favorite experiences was working with a woman who wanted to be able to handle her 44’ boat. We found that she already had most of the skills she needed, but just needed a confidence boost to confirm that she had the skills. Through several lessons on her boat and ours, we were able to help her hone the skills she had to the point that she could not only handle her own boat, but also move on the get her captain’s license.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, students should think about what they want to get out of the lesson. So often, instructors want to teach the same thing to everyone - part of that is because that is all the instructors know.
Students should also think about the time committment and cost. One advantage of private lessons is that, while they may cost more per hour, students are generally able to improve their skills more more quickly than in a group setting.

Details
Our standard group lesson is $100 for a two-hour lesson. We also have the next step of a 12 hour group lesson for $300. Our private lessons are $100 per hour on our boat or $75 per hour on your boat.
