About Emily
I teach very nontraditionally on refurbished vintage machines and we create sustainable fashions from your jeans and t-shirts in the beginner's class.
I have been sewing since I was 12 and have been teaching on and off over the past 10 years. I have sponsored several of my young students to present their designs in a runway show with Indiana Fashion Foundation.
I have been a full time textile artist for 21 years and part time for even longer. Most of my early work included working in NYC's garment district and later being an Asst. Textile Curator for a Pennsylvania museum. I presented my new collection in Milan, Italy in September.
I have received several 3rd place awards for my wearable art in regional museums in the Midwest. Several of my pieces of wearable art have been accessioned into regional museums, as well.

I tailor make each class geared to what the student wants to learn. Recently, I've been working with small businesses helping them learn their own machines and specific projects they bring in.
I learned in school and my mom also taught me at home. Students rarely get that opportunity anymore, unfortunately. I began teaching one winter and was overwhelmed at how many people signed up for class.
I have been sewing since I was 12. But I have had over 30+ years working in fashion and art, which included New York City's Garment District, a Pennsylvania Museum and now my own fashion brand.

New students will learn basic parts of the sewing machine along with basic skill sets while having fun. Students are required to bring an old t-shirt and a pair of jeans to the first class. Ones that they don't mind using and working with in class. This is a maker’s studio where sewing machines and tools are provided, unless you’d like to bring your own. After you get a few classes under your belt, you will know if you want to invest further in your new hobby.
I love sharing my experiences with students to encourage them to achieve their goals short term and long term.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out. Consider what knowledge, if any, you already have with sewing. If you consider yourself at a basic level, the project should also be basic. Always check the manual that came with your machine. If one did not come with it, check online to download a pdf of that model if you are bringing your own. Make sure your machine is in good working order and you know how to operate it. Otherwise, you may want to request a lesson learning your own sewing machine.

Emily Gartner is a knowledgeable and professional artist and a true joy to be around. She is quite adept at teaching sewing skills, even to someone like myself, who has limited experience. I learned various techniques and was encouraged creatively.

I just attended one of Emily's workshops on refashioning clothes. It was so fun! If you're wanting to do something fun with friends or just by yourself, take this class! Emily is so patient and full of ideas she freely shares. I learned fashion down and dirty secrets that she shared from her time working for fashion houses in New York. The time zipped by (no pun intended) and before I went home, I was feeling full of creativity and happiness from hanging out in her fabulous studio with other like-minded people. I definitely recommend, even if you can't sew, she shares all kinds of ideas. Her creativity is infectious.
Emily is extremely skilled at her craft as well as being an engaging instructor. I love her classes!

Details
Lesson Prices:
$25. each for two people taking the same class. Minimum booking is for 2 hour segments.
$50. for private lessons. Minimum bookings are for 2 hour segments.
It is suggested that you take at least 3 classes if you are wanting to learn how to sew. One session will not cover everything.
Payment is due when making reservations for your particular time slot.
Students do not get refunded if they are "no shows". I am setting aside time to teach and this is how I make a living.
