About Rosalind
I "Move “Home Ec” into High Tech!"
Hi! My name is Rosalind Beck. I am known as “The Digitizing Diva”! I teach the technology and software behind sewing, embroider/digitizing and quilting. Software that I teach includes EQ (Electric Quilt), QuiltPro, Artistic Sewing Suite, DesignWorks, Silhouette Studio, Embird, and both BERNINA and Pfaff software offerings (dealer cerified). I have been a technology educator since 2008 at the Chatlton Sewing Center. I also teach basic sewing and quilting if you are looking to finish that quilt :)
I love seeing my students eyes light up when they have done something they thought was previously impossible! Teaching someone to layout a t-shirt quilt on a computer before they even cut one thread in their fabic is just awesome!
As my Father was a teacher, I came by it naturally :)
Being in high tech, I was a Technical Trainer for Cisco Systems for a call center product that is still in use today.
My background is a perfect storm of skills and exposure. Growing up, my Mother owned an embroidery business, and my Father was a graphic arts teacher. In my 20's I graduated with a BA of English and a minor in publishing. After which, I worked in high tech. Graphic arts and design have always been my passion. I left high tech to persue a career in the arts and never looked back. Being a woman in high tech, I got to expereince many unkind things that effect women learning tech today. Because of that experience, I also focus on empowering women to "own their tech" to let their creativity FLY!

My classes are student driven. We work off of projects that are focused on learning the skills desired. Over the phone, I like to ask about those skills to be learned and then move forward with projects so that students can have a hands-on applied learning experience.
My specialty, if you will, is working with older students. I teach a wide spectrum of students. I have worked with those who have special needs and with creative virtuosos. I do not however teach typical "kid classes". My demographic is 16 years old to 80+
Have your tools ready.
If you are wanting to learn something like machine embroidery, make sure you have an embroidery machine available to you. If you don't and you are unsure about what you need, ask for a "intro class" before any purchasing happens. Lots of places will try to "sell you" on what you need. I won't lie, I have preferences for my tools, but your tools need to be specific to YOU. I am not getting paid to sell you a machine, so I am independent in my opinions.
As for a list of suitable tools for general sewing classes, the most IMPORTANT is to have a sewing machine at your own disposal that can drop the "feed dogs", adjust the pressure of the sewing foot, and cost more than $200 at a big box store.
If you wish to learn a piece of software, purchase it. Don't worry about installing it, we can do that together.
When working with any teacher, you need to make sure you are not afraid of doing work outside of the class. To make the most of your money during teaching time, do as much prep work as possible so you can focus on the FUN with creating and learning!
