About Sophia

About me (the boring stuff):

I am a trained, professional tutor who has 500+ hours of experience tutoring English (ages 4 to 18).
I received a grade 9 in both English Literature and English Language at GCSE and an A* at A-level.
I am currently an undergraduate studying English language and Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London.

About me (the not-so-boring stuff):

I have volunteered around the word (Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar) teaching English as a foreign language.
I have won multiple national cheerleading championships.
I speak some Spanish and have been learning Mandarin for 2 years.

About the lesson

In the first lesson I will work with you to set specific goals that are personally tailored to what you want to achieve. Over time, we will work together to review these goals and the progress you have made.

I really emphasise the importance of using mark schemes, student essays with examiner commentaries and past papers. Knowing what the examiner wants to see is the ticket to a high-mark essay.

My rate is £40 per hour however my previous students have found that they prefer doing 1.5 hours (£60).

The list of texts I support (but are not limited to) are below.

Prose:
- The Great Gatsby
- Frankenstein
- Lord of the Flies
Plays:
- A Streetcar Named Desire
- Macbeth
Anthologies:
- AQA Power and Conflict
- AQA Paris
- Unseen Poetry

Sophia's response
Maria showed strong interest in reading in her library outside of tutoring time. She discoverd a range of impressive vocabulary and told me them confidently. She also provided some spontaneous examples when using sentence starters in todays lesson.

Sophia and I have been friends since childhood, throughout school I’ve never met someone who’s been so dedicated and ambitious in her studies. Not only this but she’s always supported me with difficulties I’ve had (being someone with severe dyslexia) and had patience with the process of explaining things to me. She’s hardworking, organised and a lovely person.
