About Brooke
Lancaster County native Deanna Brooke Mead is a Philadelphia-based violist who specializes in small chamber ensemble playing, as well as operatic and symphonic orchestral playing. She is also active in the Philadelphia new music scene, often premiering works by Philadelphia composers. Most recently, Ms. Mead was featured as a soloist in the Boyer College of Music Mosaic Showcase, performing a movement from Hindemith’s Op. 25, No. 1.
Ms. Mead made her international operatic debut as the Principal Violist for the Mediterranean Opera Studio and Festival in 2018, performing in Mozart's "Nozze di Figaro," Donizetti's "L'elisir d'Amore," and Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" in Caltagirone, Sicily. Prior to that, she was the Principal Violist for the Temple University Composer's Orchestra, premiering works by Temple University composition students and faculty, as well as for the Temple University Opera Orchestra, performing Mozart's "Così fan Tutte" and Lehar's "The Merry Widow." Following her return to the states in September 2018, Ms. Mead combined her love of opera and new music through the ENAensemble’s production of The Propaganda Machine Show, a combination film, opera, and cabaret showcasing music as a form of propaganda. Since then, she has been an active member of ENAensemble productions.
In addition to opera and contemporary music, Ms. Mead enjoys a busy schedule of chamber and orchestral playing, performing as the Principal Violist of the Temple University Symphony Orchestra and as the violist in both a string quartet and piano quartet in the Philadelphia area. She currently works as a private lesson instructor and freelance violist, substituting other symphonic violists in the Philadelphia and Lancaster/York areas of Pennsylvania as well as playing chamber music for events, including galas, cocktail hours, and weddings. Ms. Mead is currently finishing her Master of Music in Performance at Temple University; she is a student of both Kerri Ryan and Che-Hung Chen, violists of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She teaches at the Temple University Community Music Scholars' Program, where she runs a studio of seven young violinists and violists.
In her spare time, Ms. Mead enjoys practicing yoga, baking bread, and cuddling her cats.
Seeing students succeed is the most incredible experience, especially if they have been working towards a goal for a long time. I enjoy sharing music that is special to me with them as well, because I beleive that music can heal wounds that we don't even realize we have and celebrate joys that are too big for words.
I started when I was in college; my high school orchestra director added my name to a list of available private teachers distributed to the school district over summer vacation, and I began teaching that summer. I've loved it ever since, and was thrilled to make it a more regular occurence than just summer breaks when I joined the Community Music Scholars' Program in 2018.
I have a Master of Music in Viola Performance and six years of teaching experience in my own private studio. Two of those years were spent with the Temple University Community Music Scholars' Program.
I also spent many summers as a counselor for the Elizabethtown College Music Camp, where I ran sectionals, chamber ensembles, and individual lessons.

I start with a basic technical overview to see what their skills are currently and what we need to work on. Then we put the instrument away and have a conversation about what the student wants to accomplish with these lessons - why do they want to play violin/viola? What kind of music do they want to play? What are they excited about when it comes to music?
All types! Adults and children both, with a wide range of abilities.
Be patient. Learning to play any instrument takes a lot of time, practice, and discipline. Learning to play violin or viola takes even more of that, because it is such a subtle art. However, if you put in the work, you will be rewarded with a fulfilling, life-long skill that you can share with anyone.
My students' holiday concert at the Temple University Community Music Scholars' Program. Many of them worked on their orchestra music for this concert in their lessons with me, and to see their work displayed so proudly on stage was incredibly rewarding.
