Darlene was my teacher for over 10 years. She is not only a phenomenal player, but a wonderful and extremely experienced teacher. Darlene is wonderful! She tutors from the very beginning player to the very advanced. She is a working musician who has worked with my students at a local high school for 20 years as well as teaching my child for 8 years, taking him from Hot Cross Buns to the Beethoven Violin Concerto! Darlene has been more than just a violin instructor - she is a mentor, role model, a friend, and coach. I have been playing the violin for nearly 11 years now. Darlene was my violin teacher for over 6 years, from when I first started playing in middle school until I moved away for college. She is patient, kind, understanding, while ensuring that students are held accountable for practicing and putting in the effort. With her guidance, I made it into my high school’s highest tier orchestra, played at Carnegie Hall twice, and joined my university’s symphony orchestra. She showed me that music should be shared with others and is a way to give back, which inspired my later musical endeavors at university. Over the years, Darlene has helped me develop a love for music that has shaped the violinist - and the person - I am today.

Mrs. Alfuso was a tremendous help to me in learning music! When I entered high school I found myself surrounded by folks who had been taking private lessons for years. She helped me bridge that gap through her lessons where I learned theory, scales, different positions (3rd, 5th which were so foreign at the time) and how to better perform music. My music director, Mr. Jim Kollias also noticed the growth. I owe it to her for helping me get to Carnegie Hall!! Thanks Mrs. Alfuso!

Ms Alfuso has great enthusiasm for the violin and excels at communicating that to her students, and helping them work through rough patches. She is very patient and kind and also very adept at analyzing what the problem is that needs to be addressed and overcome. She is also very flexible in her approach to musical pedagogy. I was her first ever adult student and as such represented quite a challenge to her. I took my first two years of lessons from her and then moved out of the area. I have had many teachers since then, but when I moved back to Orange County, I couldn't wait to look her up and entrust my musical journey to her once again. First we worked on undoing some of the bad habits I had acquired over the years without proper instruction--bowing problems mostly--and now I am finally starting to show some real progress in my playing, and I approach my practice with more disclpline and concentration. I hear her whispering in my ear telling me to lean more to the left, keep my fingers curved, not pull my bowing arm back, use less bow (or sometimes more bow) etc, etc. The violin is a difficult instrument to master and it is a constant challenge to pay attention to what you are doing (or not doing) and to listen to yourself and others.
