About Ezra

Friendly, flexible and reliable. I really enjoy teaching because I love seeing the value it can bring to students and I learn a lot myself from all the interesting questions I get asked. I had a chemistry tutor myself when I was doing my A-levels and this was a major factor inspiring me to do a chemistry degree.
3 years experience tutoring.
A levels: Maths A*, Chemistry A, Physics B.
Master's in Chemistry from University of Bristol (First Class with Honours).
80% in final year dissertation.
Over 1.5 years experience working as an organic chemist at a small company.
Research experience at the University of Bristol in research assistant role.
Can do online and in person - I'm based in Cambridge, Mill Road.
During my online lessons I use a tablet to annotate and draw things in a way that's clear to follow on-screen. Additionally, I provide a PDF of the lesson afterwards for the student's own revision.
Always happy to help with any specific questions sent to me via email a student might have that relate to the lesson or homework set.
Thank you, Ezra :)

What sets me apart?
I chose to get into teaching because I have felt firsthand the impact a great teacher can make.
Being an effective educator is not just about the content of the lessons, but too about what you inspire. Once I experienced my own spark of enthusiasm, I naturally began to develop a deeper personal fascination with science. Thus, the tools gained in a lesson can act to accelerate one’s own independent learning.
My approach?
I believe that people learn interactively. No child learns to speak their first language from a textbook. Despite this, as we grow older, we need rules and structure to keep our knowledge alive. Though, few people would choose to learn entirely from a textbook either!
As such, I believe a combination of approaches are needed. The student will learn through being asked questions which act to activate one’s inner problem-solving capacity. However, structure and repetition are needed to reinforce finer details. To put another way, there are things that need to be ‘understood’ and there are things that need to be ‘learnt’. I can do a lot to help the ‘understanding’ part; learning comes through repetition and application which is the responsibility of the student.
I would hope that my approach acts to nurture an inner fascination for the sciences. However, I am also aware that these subjects are not for everyone and there are those who just need to get through the exams before moving on to a different discipline. I hope that my excellent academic track record (top of the year in my GCSE’s), (First in every year of study at MSci in chemistry at the University of Bristol) speaks to my personal ability to succeed in exams.
So, what do I say to the student who says “how can I pass my exams with as little effort as possible?” Another way to phrase it is “how do I learn more efficiently?” Nobody wants to waste precious time faffing around and failing to absorb new knowledge. I believe the key to exam success (and I know this sounds obvious but it really is the key) is simply practising past papers and targeted topic-relevant questions. By the time you’ve done enough past questions, sitting the exam will be far less daunting – it will become muscle memory. But trying to weather this process alone without the guidance of a tutor can be challenging. We’ve all been tempted, when facing a tricky problem, to cheekily glance at the mark scheme at some point – frankly we just don’t know where to begin. When I go through papers with a student, if they’re not sure, I will ask tailored prompting questions to get them thinking. Going through past papers also allows me to know which areas one is struggling with most so we can spend more time focussing on these.
I look forward to working with you soon.
Thanks, Ezra
